About Todd D. Smith

Todd D. Smith has spent his entire career as an art museum leader — first as a curator and, for the past 20-plus years, as a director. Since 2020, he has been executive director of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte – the South’s only modern art museum.Todd has earned a reputation for leading organizations through institutional transformations. He has spearheaded major capital projects, including the fundraising for and construction of a new Tampa Museum of Art, a $32 million project. In the case of the Bechtler, which opened in 2010, he is guiding the museum through a transformative time as he works to champion and exhibit more modern art – including living artists.Coming to the Bechtler was a homecoming for Todd, who previously served as Curator of American Art at The Mint Museum in Charlotte. He left the Queen City in 2000 when he was tapped as president and CEO of Plains Art Museum in Fargo, North Dakota. That was followed by executive director roles at the Knoxville Museum of Art in Tennessee, Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, Tampa Museum of Art and Orange County (California) Museum of Art.Among career highlights: “My Generation: Young Chinese Artists,” a joint exhibition at Tampa Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. The 2014 exhibit featured 27 young Chinese artists who had all been born under China’s “one child” policy. It marked the first time the art world had been given a glimpse of this generation of artists, many of whom went on to gain international reputations. At the Bechtler, a proud moment occurred in late 2021 when the museum presented a nine-screen film exhibition by Isaac Julien, telling the story of Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi. “Isaac Julien: Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvelous Entanglement” was a departure for the Bechtler – and it announced that the new director – only the second one in museum history – was unafraid to push boundaries. Todd, an eighth generation Virginian, has always enjoyed history, art and architecture. He earned his bachelor’s degree in art history and political science from Duke University and his Master of Arts degree in art history from Indiana University. In his free time, Todd enjoys traveling (he’s been around the world – twice), home improvement projects and spending time with his husband, Ben Hood, and their Corgi, “Pebbles.”
