When I was a freshmen in school...I started working at KFC (a short walk from my home) for Don & Connie Sanderson. I quickly learned how to run the front end, registers, taking orders, etc.. I knew this would one day soon prepare me for my future job orientation with various other lines of work. Working at the Standard setting all display advertising on compugraphic computers in '85 gave me lots of hands-on experience with computer processing. Larry Smith, editor, gave me an awesome referral after I applied at Texas Medical Association in Austin at 21 years old. The Texas Medical Association (TMA) called me back on my first day of interviews. Though this would serve as a stepping stone initially as the mail clerk, then as one of two production assistants...operating various labeling machines, folding machines, cheshire labeling machine, collates & cutting machine....often times working overtime at night with another co-worker/production assistant. Austin was the thrill of my lifetime at 21 years of age....and I would go on to forever remember my big career break (so I would think!). The TMA employees rallied around me as I navigated my life with full-blown AIDS at 23 years old as did my entire family. As the world grappled with the AIDS crisis in those dark times of those '80s, so did a state medical association & young family of a rural community deep in the Heart of Texas...who would be there as my rock. We all learned how to evolve with understanding and deeper regard to life & living. Prior to '95, experimental drugs for this chronic illness, approximately one year before, were reserved for those with the prerequisite of being terminal. We were first told I was going to have to live in Dallas for treatment but Dr. John Hunt, San Angelo, helped extend my life making me eligible for the drugs in a small-town pharmacy, Eden. Someone's child there was already receiving treatment. FDA in'95 did approve these medications known world-wide today as HAART...highly active retroviral therapy distributed by most pharmacies today. Of this new year in 2024... I just turned 60! God is good.
