I branched off from the ultrasound system PM responsibilities to take on a newly created position for managing the connectivity and interoperability roadmaps across the entire ultrasound system portfolio and market segments. It was new and challenging and I embraced it with an understanding that the IT solution space typically took back seat to developing cool and high-tech imaging features. So I also became the IT cheerleader/evangelist and SME for the field. This role provided a greater opportunity to define requirements for multiple markets on a global basis including close cooperation and relationships with many 3rd party vendors of off-line clinical reporting solutions for OB, Gyn and Vascular applications. I also lead business plan, market research and development efforts to leverage existing Philips workstation technologies to advance off-line manipulation of 3D ultrasound data (Volume Imaging). I thoroughly enjoyed being looked up to as the "connectivity expert" by the sales/service organizations, but mostly the satisfaction from helping customers.

This was a fun and challenging time as we embarked on the developing a new flagship ultrasound system that was to replace an existing and highly successful, well established system. From a blank slate, we teamed up with R&D, Human Factors, Industrial Design, Supply Chain, Q&R and of course, our end users to layout the workings for what eventually became the iU22 Ultrasound system. To date, this is one of Philips most successful ultrasound products which has been copied by virtually all competitors. I spread my wings and flexed some underworked muscles to lead various marketing teams, represent on core teams and present strategies, roadmaps to the executive staff.

Siemens recruited me to manage development of their new mid-range ultrasound products. This was an incredible period of personal growth and exposure to international business. I had responsibilities to define the system requirements for products that were targeted for the European markets and manufactured by a Japanese OEM. I am very proud of the many accomplishments I was able to make happen, including the first color flow imaging system developed by our OEM, early product launches and recognition provided to me by upper management. Since I don't speak Japanese, I developed a way (via visual flowcharts) to communicate product requirements in unambiguous and testable ways for the Japanese R&D staff to interpret. My proudest accomplishment was being able to establish trust and long standing relationships with our Japanese partner.
