Halfway up a mountain in Glacier National Park I found myself caught in the middle of a metaphor. Above us and climbing further was a group of attractive, enthusiastic hikers yelling encouragement to me, my friend and my broken leg. Below us was a mama grizzly and her cub, also headed up. I looked at my companion and postulated whether, in hiking as in life, I would be motivated by carrot or stick.Ultimately, we plopped down and argued the relative merits of the global warming debate. It was an unseasonable 400 degrees, and we decided we were sweaty and untasty to either bear or fox. Besides, my broken leg was aching, and we hoped to turn that into a compelling message for one -- but not the other -- party sharing our mountain trek. The trick would be figuring out how.Survival makes a great motivator on the mountain, but success works just as well in real life. I am an experienced communicator who is equally at home in the wilds of consumer and trade media as on the PR and client sides. I've survived national park grizzlies and Florida gators with only the sacrifice of a shoe or three. I've chased Oklahoma tornadoes and California earthquakes and racked up more than 12 years of reporting and editing experience in print, on the Web and in new media, and I also have more than five years experience in marketing, strategic thinking and business development.Hard lessons have taught me that carefully executed strategy can not only avoid the bears but reward you with summits with unbelievable vistas. So put the bear on my heels so you can enjoy those views. I've been there so you can do that.Specialties: I'm an award-winning writer, public relations executive, photographer and videographer, who is equally at home wielding a pen and paper, a keyboard, a digital camera, Photoshop or Windows Moviemaker or the like.
