We are building a national digitized historic newspaper archive! Atla.com has recently acquired The Catholic News Archive and other properties from CRRA, which is where I started working on this initiative.The Project: The University of Notre Dame and their head librarian started a foundation and initiative to digitize historic catholic newspapers for research purposes. When I joined it had been spun off into an association (CRRA) and had fewer than 10,000 pages published. My work then was primarily to build out the operational capacity and execute with a network of partners to publish more content. See our work here: The Catholic News Archive. In addition to the ongoing publishing work using the capacity I built, CRRA asked for help with more strategic efforts such as: Branding and positioning of the archive, developing services that could generate revenue, and working on strategic alliances. Results: Nearly 800,000 pages of content from over 20 publications are now part of the archive. We have several strategic partnerships (JSTOR, WorldCat, EBSCO, ProQuest) with more in process. A new Hosting Service has been built and promoted with 3 paying clients with more in discussions. Without paid promotion, this collection will have over 1 million views this year (2024).

Nairobi County, Kenya

Director of Partnerships; Strategic Advisor (Consultant on contract)• Project: Negotiating and winning client contracts. Won $10m project then took the lead in building partnerships and overseeing early operations until client operations team was in place. Managing discovery and logistics for local startups partnerships in Kenya, DRC, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. The paid project was to hire and train local youth to use technology in interviewing families in villages, collecting and quality checking the information, then transmitting it for aggregation and processing and end validation. This work proceeded after getting permission from village elders to conduct the research. • Results: Total of 84,387 successful interviews (approved by the client), which was a 96.8% acceptance rate. Breakdown of interviews by country: Kenya (61,783), Uganda (13,505), Zimbabwe (3,799), Nigeria (2,768) and other countries (2,532). Over 1,000 young people were trained and paid.

Salt Lake City Metropolitan Area

Strategic Advisor; Hands-on Project Execution (consultant on contract). Previous project ended in 2020. A new project in new location is asking for me and is in development (part time) • Project: On the World Bank team working to develop and promote a digital jobs strategy to senior government officials in Pakistan. Worked with the World Bank Staff and regional Information Technology Board members on the execution of several initiatives. Took the lead in developing Northern Pakistan as an outsourcing destination for large Pakistan service providers. Also worked to help local governments make policy changes to attract more international businesses. Involved as a speaker in promotional tours to other countries. Directly trained and managed some training projects in Peshawar. • Results: 1,090 new digital income jobs, 643 Women trained in digital inclusion, 8,570 Youth who participated in digital employment training, 3,105 youth trained in BPO and other digital work, 3 Work centers established (centers designed to attract work to the region).

With more than 2.7 million paying subscribers, Ancestry.com is the world leader in providing family history research services and content. Directed all technical and operational aspects of producing searchable databases from physical records located around the world. With my team, we built one of the worlds largest digitization and digital content publication operations in the world. Scale of digitization is in the hundreds of million of images per year, and data publication in the billions. GLOBAL OPERATIONSDirected the building of teams, infrastructure, and processes for significant global growth in our large scale scanning and data processing operations (Managed $40M budget (2014), 300+ direct and 5,000+ indirect employees). STRATEGIC BPO LEADERSHIPStrategically managed $20M+ supply chain budget (2014) for transcription and data services with global BPO providers in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Mexico, Nicaragua, Kenya, and many other locations. Extensive work in the U.K., Germany and Italy. ON TIME DELIVERYIncreased on time delivery rates from 73% on time to 95% + on-time, and held consistently through 2012, 2013, and 2014. DATA OPERATIONS (Large Scale)Built out and managed massive data audit, validation and normalization function (operations average 40M fields daily). Improved search results and data integrity with teams managing complex data analysis (heavy SQL work, transitioned to Hadoop).HIGH TECHDrove IT pipeline rebuild (over 75 services and tools used by 300 + employees) and helped led technological innovation initiatives with product and development teams (i.e. Hand-writing recognition (ICDAR contests, vendor searches, Internal team efforts).

Responsible for leading a turn around initiative and to upgrade the capabilities of Ancestry’s digital capture team and infrastructure, which were in their infancy in 2008. INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONSExpanded operations in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Italy using a combination of outsourcing, employees, contractors, and suppliers. 5x growth while keeping overhead low. PARTNERSHIPSBuilt out a 30+ person new scanning facility in cooperation with The National Archives of the United States, being the exclusive partner allowed to remove original records for digitization at our facility. Worked with major archives around the world. OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCYImproved remote image capture rate from $0.15 cents per record to $0.08. Cut capture equipment costs (100 + units in operations) in half.

FamilySearch.org is a global organization that works with Libraries and Archives to digitize and publish family history material. It is the worlds largest family history repository. PRODUCT LAUNCHLaunched new crowdsourcing platform, FamilySearch Indexing, which matches volunteers to records to be keyed for publication. Achieved astonishing growth from 25M records keyed annual to 125M. PARTNERSHIPSWorked extensively with hundreds of local ecclesiastical units as well as leaders from Genealogical Societies from all over the U.S. OPERATIONSManaged a team of operations staff responsible for keeping new projects queued into the system as well as managing the significant challenges of rapid growth with a global community of indexers and partner organizations.

FamilySearch.org is a global organization that works with Libraries and Archives to digitize and publish family history material. It is the worlds largest family history repository. REMOTE OPERATIONS MANAGEMENTDirected a large group of remote camera operators (70-90 people) who were responsible for both microfilming and digital imaging on site at libraries and archives. OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCYIncreased camera operations productivity by 15% per year (18% In last year) while working with dozens of governments, libraries, and archives throughout the U.S. CONTRACT MANAGEMENT Managed archive/library contract approvals (2000 - 2002) and logistics for remote Account Managers (Latin America, Europe, and U.S.).

The Granite Mountain Records Vault (GMRV) has over 2m rolls of Microfilm containing historical records. It sits securely in a granite mountainside where production and storage operations are conducted. TECHNICAL LEADERSHIPProposed and launched $4m project to re-master microfilm from older, deteriorating media.PRODUCTION MANAGEMENTManaged team of 75 people to fill daily orders (1,000+) using large scale dark rooms, chemical intensive fiche and film duplicating machines to create customer orders. Also managed teams handling inventory operations, shipping, and receiving. LEAN MANUFACTURINGReduced backlog (12,000 + orders to zero); Implemented Lean Manufacturing techniques to reduce waste and improve cycle times. Restructuring to cells reduced labor by 12% and increased throughput by 18%.
