Did physics research in Professor Frances Hellman's lab. Experimental condensed matter physics, specifically synthesizing amorphous materials and relating their low- and high-temperature properties. I advanced to PhD candidacy in December 2019.

Led introductory physics discussion sections and labs for 8 hours a week for two semesters (about 100 students total), in addition to grading papers and exams and assuming other duties as needed.

Providence, Rhode Island

I worked with Meg Doucette (who had just finished her first year at UChicago) and Shan-Conrad Wolf (who was a student at Cambridge entering the Tripos part iii), under the guidance of Maxim Arnold (UT Dallas) on a dynamical systems problem. More specifically, we studied a discontinuous modification of the Chirikov-Taylor standard map. We used Mathematica and MATLAB to gain insight into the map's behavior and were able to prove some results about periodic orbits and the length of an escaping orbit in phase space. A large part of this work was published the following year in Experimental Mathematics in a paper titled On a Very Steep Version of the Standard Map (arXiv:1609.07424).

I worked with Professor Marlies Gerber on a problem in dynamical billiards. Specifically, we showed that for a generic strictly convex C^2 strictly convex billiard table, a generic pair of points in the interior of the table is insecure. We later picked up the work, extending it and polishing it into a paper that was published: Thomas Dauer and Marlies Gerber, Generic absence of finite blocking for interior points of Birkhoff billiards, Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems - Series A, Volume 36, Issue 9, September 2016 (arXiv:1508.03858).I won the IU Provost's Award for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity in the Natural and Mathematical Sciences Category for this work with Prof. Gerber.
