The Davenport Diamond Rail Grade Separation project is part of Metrolinx’s GO Expansion program. To support future two-way all-day GO service on the Barrie line, a rail grade separation is being constructed at the Davenport Diamond, one of the busiest train intersections in North America, where the Barrie GO corridor meets the CP Rail tracks. The project includes construction of a new rail grade separation between GO Transit’s Barrie line and CP Rail’s North Toronto subdivision, as well as the addition of a second main line track on the Barrie line. Also included is staged demolition and reconstruction of a rail over road bridge at Bloor Street, rehabilitation of rail over road bridges at Dupont Street and Davenport Road, a new electrical and communications building, MSE walls, a stormwater drainage system, fire life, safety and public egress, and a pedestrian underpass at Paton Road. Once the grade separation is complete, new public spaces and mutli-use trails that enhance community experience will be constructed through the rail corridor, connecting neighborhoods previously cut off by the Barrie line.

Graham was awarded Phase 3 of South Delta Water Main Replacement Project in September 2018. The scope of work involved the installation of 1.3km of 914mm steel pipe, the construction of a cast-in-place concrete crossover chamber, and the installation of storm drainage pipes, catch basins and culverts. Traffic management, utility accommodation and dewatering were significant elements of the project. In May 2019, a further component was awarded for a Provisional portion of the works, to install an additional 380LM, including a 70LM micro-tunnel section under the BC rail alignment and DeltaPort Way. Graham self-performed the concrete crossover chamber structure, within a sheet-pile coffer dam for a 7.2m deep excavation, and as the project matured, Graham personnel installed watermain pipe too.

I worked as a project coordinator on the Glenmore Trail Improvements project from start to finish. This project involves the construction of a new six lane Glenmore Trail SE alignment from 18th Street Interchange to Barlow Trail SE. This includes a new interchange at Glenmore Trail and Ogden Road, a five-lane, 65 metre long bridge, and as well as a new eight-lane, 125 metre long at-grade separated crossing over the Canadian National Railway, Canadian Pacific Railway tracks and the Western Headworks Canal. Graham is self-performing the structure work, and has successfully erected seventy pre-cast concrete NU girders. Graham is coordinating with the City of Calgary to support the traffic signals and accommodate traffic during construction. Subtrades are completing the earthworks, utilities, MSE and noise wall, lighting and ITS, roadworks and landscaping scopes of work.Over 40,000 vehicles per day travel through this section of Glenmore Trail. There are significant impacts to traffic congestion due to the current at-grade railway crossings. Once the project is complete, this traffic will be free-flowing. This work also provides infrastructure upgrades necessary for the upcoming Green Line Light Rail Transit, and sets the stage for a new interchange at Barlow Trail SE and Glenmore Trail.

The construction scope also included the design and construction of the foundations and piers for the elevated guideway section of the project, the construction of 1600m of special structures and the completion of 3.1km of at-grade guideway through Port Moody. SGJV also constructed the enabling works and transitions at the north and south end of the tunneled section of the project. After I finished my construction management studies, I moved to Vancouver to work as a project coordinator under Josh Binkley, he was the project manager for the special structures section of the Evergreenline project. My responsibilities were to complete quality inspections with the owner representative such as pre-pour, rebar, post pour and deficiency inspections, inspect the flatness on the concrete after/during grinding of the bearing pads for the rail, complete site safety inspections, maintain safety records, help to plan, coordinate and monitor concrete pours, completed take-offs for required formwork and concrete for pours, worked with my Project Managers/Superintendent to update project schedule and budget to identify potential construction issues, completed RFQ's for the site purchaser to order materials/equipment for the special structures section, assisting my project manager with areas of the cost forecast, assisted my superintendent with the crews timesheets and to coordinate SGJV works that were adjacent to the BC Rail tracks with BC Rail flagging team.

Construction of the 11km Evergreen Light Rail Transit project consisted of an extension to the existing Sky Train system which directly links to the Millennium Line with connections to the Expo Line, Canada Line and West Coast express in the Lower Mainland of BC. Evergreen Rapid Transit (EGRT) Construction was awarded the project in a design, build and finance contract. In turn, EGRT subcontracted the work out to four major groups, Graham in a joint venture with SNC-Lavalin (SGJV), were one of the four joint ventures contracted to design-build a portion of the work.Initially SGJV was tasked with major utility diversion works along the full extent of the Project. The construction scope also included the design and construction of the foundations and piers for the elevated guideway section of the project, the construction of 1600m of special structures and the completion of 3.1km of at-grade guideway through Port Moody. SGJV also constructed the enabling works and transitions at the north and south end of the tunneled section of the project.I completed my co-op placement during my third year of college on the Evergreen line project for nine months as a quality coordinator reporting Gennady Mourzikov, he was the quality manager for the SNC Lavalin-Graham Joint Venture (SGJV). I then had to return to Ireland to complete my final year of college. My responsibilities were to set up the BIM 360 quality system that was being used for SGJV scopes of work, setting up a filing matrix to keep track of all the quality documents as they were being filled, complete quality inspections such as pre-pour, rebar, post pour and deficiency inspections, inspect the flatness on the concrete after/during grinding of the bearing pads for the rail, complete site safety inspections, maintain safety records, help to plan, coordinate and monitor concrete pours.
