About Tom Garner
I lead the XR-BioLAB (virtual/augmented/mixed-reality, biosensing/UX) at Sheffield Hallam University and I teach on the BSc Computer Games Technology and BSc Computer Science programmes. My group works closely with CENTRIC to deliver simulation, communication and serious games technology solutions for multinational counterterrorism and emergency response organisations. I represent a team of researchers, designers, content creators and XR technical experts and we seek to connect and collaborate with individuals and groups with application-side expertise, such as sector-specific education and skills training (business, emergency services, retail, etc.), healthcare and entertainment/arts.

I co-manage the Portsmouth University XR research group. My research explores Cross-Reality technology for education and skills training. Current projects include Virtual Reality for empathetic skills training in Dentistry and Augmented Reality for procedural training of Radiographers. I also coordinate undergraduate units in VR/AR at Portsmouth and am course leader for the upcoming UoP degree programme in Virtual and Augmented Reality.
