Profile bio

About Tom Grayson

I retired in 2011 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Currently, I am a consultant and facilitator of evaluation. I continue to provide evaluation training to local affiliates and community non-profits. Areas of evaluation workshops include capacity building, program and policy evaluation, logic modeling, evaluation assessment, evaluative thinking and appreciative inquiry.Over the past many years, I have been an active and involved member in the American Evaluation Association (AEA). I am a past Chair of the Assessment in Higher Education Topical Interest Group (2002-2005); I served on the AEA Ethics Committee Professional Development Task Force (2006-2007), and the AEA International Committee (2007 – 2009). I was elected to serve on the Board of Directors (2014). I worked on AEA’s End Goals task-force and AEA’s Branding Committee (2016).One area which is very important in my work is evaluative thinking. Evaluators, regardless of the cross-disciplinary diversity in fields of work, must recognize that evaluative thinking is at the core of evaluation practice. After understanding and describing what is to be evaluated (e.g., programs, projects, policy, etc.) practitioners must use practical logic and research logic to clearly identify the evaluation questions. Practitioner logic includes accurate description of a program; actionable evaluation; culturally responsive evaluation; and, capacity building. Research logic includes: Best practices; addressing funding requirements for research-based practice; aiding in interpretation and generalizability of evaluation findings; and, facilitates program scaling up.
