About Tom Macgregor
A PhD Researcher within the Material and Condensed Matter Physics group with the University of Glasgow. My project involves the use of electron microscopy and related techniques, to study the nanostructure of novel ferroelectric ceramics. Before starting my PhD I Studied Materials Science and Engineering student and Chemistry, this has given me a wide range of experience, particularly in materials chemistry. I have experience developing liquid crystals and performing independent research in both industrial and academic settings. In my current studying I am developing my skills as scientist and pursuing my interest in the development of nanotechnology and novel applications of ceramic and composite materials in electronics. My main hobbies include running, cycling, long walks, Science fiction, and technology. For more details my full CV is attached below in .doc and .pdf format.
Listed skills include Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Hplc, and 15 others.

Tom Macgregor work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Phd Researcher (Did Not Graduate)
My research centres around investigating the nanostructure of novel relaxor ferroelectric ceramic for use in high temperature applications. My work involves the use of electron microscopy coupled with related measurement techniques, including EELS and the analysis of diffraction data. Preparation of my samples involves the use of a focussed ion beam and will ultimately involve incorporating heating and electrical biasing chip into the sample preparation in order to monitor the changes in sample structures in situ under the electron microscopy. The nanoscale properties will be measured by probing samples at atomic resolution.
Msc Student
This source involved full time study for an MSc Materials Science and Engineering, with a research project that will focus on developing novel ceramic composites for use as capacitors investigating the development of a novel cold sintering technique to produce ZnO pellets.
Accounts Assistant
This position involves the processing of sales and purchase invoices from the sales of Swedish made forestry equipment. Other responsibilities include expenditure analysis and the collection of Intrastat data regarding the trading of goods within EU countries as required by HMRC.
Placement Student
This was a year long placement in an industrial research setting as part of my MChem degree in Chemistry. The project involved the investigations of novel switching modes in liquid crystal devices, specifically how they align under various conditions, such the device operating temperature the use of different alignment layers. Characterisation of the device performance was measured using a range imaging techniques, from polarised microscopy to SEM. The electronic properties were also recorded by observing changes in the capacitance of device over time as the system responds to variations in the applied field. The effect of introducing anionic and ionic surfactants was also recorded. These measurements allowed of a more developed understanding of how these systems align and what conditions are needed to obtain optimal performance from the test devices.
Assistant Chemist
This two-month summer placement allowed me to gain experience working in an industrial setting. The work involved collecting ground water samples from landfill site in order to measure the environmental impact of the operations, this was done by measuring a range of variables, such as the ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels. I also assisted the classification and sorting of potentially hazardous materials from several sources in the local area.
