Spreading a contagious love of learning. Recent projects include:• User-testing and designing a new "Communal Creation" feature for Rhymewit• Redesigning my 8th grade biology course around nature journaling and scientific observation• Teaching science storytelling workshops to postdocs and doctoral students• Creating short informative videos for Stanford scientistsAfter two years teaching at Stanford as a human biology course associate, and two years studying science communication in New Zealand, I started making science history rap battles in Bay Area public schools. I spent ten years teaching 8th grade science at The Nueva School in Hillsborough, California. I started "Science With Tom" (with grants from New Schools Venture Fund & 4.0 Schools) to spread the contagious enthusiasm further. Our latest product is called Rhymewit. https://rhymewit.com/Since moving to Alabama, I now work part-time for the Equal Justice Initiative on their partnership with Montgomery Public Schools.

During my 10 years teaching science at Nueva I became passionate about interdisciplinary curriculum development, project-based learning, assessment without grades, NGSS, and unleashing student creativity. My elective class - "Science Rap Academy" - produced educational music videos on YouTube that have garnered hundreds of thousands of views and are used by teachers across the country.
