As an Applications Specialist for Astronomy at OI Andor, I support Andor in their efforts to deliver research-grade detector solutions to astronomers, astrophysicists, planetary scientists, and the astronomical observatories they use to explore the cosmos. In my 4 years as a Science Fellow at Gemini Observatory 50% of my time was dedicated to support of science operations at the observatory’s two 8.1 m ground based telescopes. This included nighttime astronomical observing, planning and execution of daytime operational tasks, instrument science and calibration, support of the observatory’s PIs and their projects, and training new staff members in similar tasks. The other 50% of my time was assigned to independent planetary science research into the formation and evolution of the Solar System.In my research I conduct spectroscopic observations of the Solar System’s population of minor planets (asteroids, comets, Trans-Neptunian Objects etc.) to determine what materials are present on their surfaces and discover what they can tell us about how the Solar System formed and how it evolved over the last 4.5 billion years.
