Before joining ONS I completed a degree in Economics, developing my skills in data analysis, identifying economic trends and econometric techniques. This also gave my advanced Microsoft Office skills.Upon joining ONS I was first responsible for collating and producing the data for a gender pay gap time series spanning 20 years, which involved creating a VBA marco file used for formatting the data. After the data’s publication I led on an article which provided key analysis from this data for the general public. I then was part of a project comparing ONS labour market survey data with HMRC Pay As You Earn (PAYE) data. I led on the comparisons between the monthly wages and salary survey (from which the average weekly earnings output is drawn, which is a key economic indicator) and the PAYE data. For this I had to produce a detailed and wide-ranging report alongside my own economic and statistical analysis. This developed my project management skills alongside my ability to code in SQL effectively for data analysis and data linking, whilst also improving my ability to produce a substantial report, on time and to a professional standard. I then led on an article which was published on ONS’s website highlighting commuting habits, which again improved my skills in data analysis and my ability to produce work professionally and concisely. I am currently the lead on the labour market and household divisions central analytical team (CAT). This group is responsible for producing and releasing ad hoc articles and analysis for publication on the ONS website in addition to their business as usual. These projects have also given me a wealth of experience in tailoring my work to suit the user needs. Whether this be internal or external stakeholders, or the inquiring citizen. I have similarly gained the capability to confidently work with colleagues across professions and grades.
