My responsibilities were to build structures in various rivers in northern Michigan to improve trout habitat. This included locating and cutting down suitable trees and brush, hauling the trees and brush to the river, and then using them to assemble the structures which were anchored to the river banks with cables. By building structures in these rivers I helped to increase stream flow and reduce sediment levels, thereby improving trout habitat. In performing this job I utilized equipment such as chainsaws and a winch and had to learn how to build certain structures and in what parts of the river different structures should be built.

My job responsibilities while in the National Guard were primarily training new soldiers and preparing them for a deployment to Afghanistan. As a corporal in the National Guard I continued to hone the skills I had learned in the Army and worked to pass them on to the soldiers under my command.

As a cavalry scout I trained in reconnaissance and counterinsurgency missions primarily. Job responsibilities differed greatly between garrison duties while training in Alaska and combat operations while deployed in Iraq. My accomplishments in the Army consist of having assisted my squadmates in training for our mission in Iraq, and while deployed I worked to maintain high standards of performance and situational awareness, both for my myself and my teammates. As a result we had far fewer wounded than other units and none killed. In the Army I acquired a wealth of experience working with others as a team as well as having some leadership and training experience. In addition I learned various general military skills such as map reading, first aid, proficiency in many different types of weapons and equipment, and vehicle maintenance and operation. I also worked to keep myself in peak physical condition.
