About Tom P.

Mathematics teaching and learning is my passion! I am a seasoned lead practitioner and accredited GCSE examiner, dedicated to teaching secondary students the secrets to discovering how to optimise their performance and prepare for the next stage of their development. My greatest strength is in guiding students to find solutions and strategies to overcome barriers to learning, make connections between different topics and generate a more synchronised learning experience. Testament to the success of this teaching strategy was when I was the only secondary school finalist for the Thurrock Education award ‘Recognising and celebrating excellence in education - Excellence in Mathematics’.In addition, I have recently developed an innovative SOW and course curriculum that is dedicated to teaching key characteristics of the National Curriculum programmes of study. The SOW guides teachers how to:▸ Leverage students’ prior learning to make connections across topics and improve student retention ▸ Build a comprehensive lesson sequence that grabs the attention of all students ▸ Develop a bespoke ‘Aspect of Mastery’ brand strategy that is quickly recognisable▸ Prepare a smooth transition from one tier to another▸ Develop Mathematical reasoning strategies that nurture confidence and deeper thinking▸ Implement a powerful and distinct assessment process that informs planning ▸ Encourage a growth mindset through slowly building skills and understanding using visual, concrete and abstract resources ▸ Consolidate and challenge depth of learning using designated rich task activitiesThe combination of 25 years business acumen, from working in media sales and marketing, and 10 years teaching experience, provides me with a unique skill set, empowering me to deliver a dynamic curricular offering, derived from quality first teaching techniques, supported by research. Why not get in tough at tom1_paton@icloud.com and let’s talk education innovation?I hope to hear from you soon.

Tom P. Work Experience Details
  • William Edwards School
    Lead Practitioner | Mathematics
William Edwards School Sep 2013 - Present
I am an experienced secondary school Lead Practitioner in Mathematics, with significant business leadership and strategy development experience acquired over 25 years working in media sales and marketing. As Lead Practitioner one of my primary objectives is the development of a comprehensive SOW that addresses the recent changes to the Ofsted 3i’s framework: intent, implementation and impact. The SOW is themed around ‘Aspects of Mastery’ using a variety of teaching techniques involving visual representation, fluency, mathematical reasoning, problem solving and enrichment tasks. In this way, all students can access the material and are encouraged to engage in their learning, and in turn this helps communicate the high, challenging but realistic expectations of their performance. Each ternary unit comprises a consolidation of the topics covered in the previous units in an attempt to amalgamate and apply the skills learnt and highlights levels of student retention. Robust formal assessments are given at the end of each unit supported by student self-assessment RAG analysis. The mentoring of new and existing teachers is integral to the development of the teaching and learning strategy. My mission is to provide guidance for the inclusion of quality first teaching techniques, in line with emerging trends across the Mathematics curriculum. This informs first-rate teaching strategies, lesson planning and delivery, next step preparation skills and unit transition. This strategy has proven very successful in the past, as evidenced by the 2016 Thurrock Education awards, when I was the only secondary school finalist up for the ‘Excellence in Mathematics’ award. My GCSE students achieved, on average, 1½ grades higher in Maths than they achieved across any of their other GCSE subjects, outperforming my and the school’s expectations.

I undertook NQT training at Folkestone Academy, one of the first academies under the new government legislation, designed to accommodate the merger of two nearby secondary schools, resulting in a roll of c 2,300. I temporary relocated to Folkestone, where I was able to fully immerse myself in the culture and community of academy schooling, which was soon to be adopted as the new style of schooling by the Department of Education.Having met all the core teaching standards, I successfully passed my induction for teaching Mathematics (11-18 age range), paving the way for a new career challenge in Summer 2013.
  • Various Secondary Schools
    Supply Teacher
Various Secondary Schools Sep 2011 - Oct 2011
    Essex
Having achieved QTS in July 2011 I decided to undertake my NQT training in an academy setting. Unable to find a suitable position locally I decided to gain some teaching experience as a supply teacher in a variety of schools locally until I was able to find a suitable position. Despite the short time frame, this experience highlighted the many nuances of the different schools and students, and provided me with clarity and focus as to what type of school ethos would best suit my character and values.
