I completed several projects over my industrial placement at Cummins Inc., and gained a great understanding of a project’s life cycle and the innovation and time management required for success.Each project required excellent written and verbal communication skills to direct a team of associate engineers to carry out tasks and feedback results promptly. I was able to apply engineering theory during problem solving and troubleshooting to recommend appropriate actions which were used extensively alongside analytical skills and data analysis to reduce costly downtime when issues occurred.Abiding to test standards, quality standards, cost and environmental issues relied heavily on judgement and decision-making whilst taking ownership of issues that came about.Collaborative efforts between external companies, test facilities and interfacing between departments improved my team working skills between multiple disciplines. I was able to translate the needs of each team and deliver the appropriate creative solutions. Adapting to and fitting in with different cultures was also necessary to guarantee success. I represented Cummins professionally and confidently during these projects taking leadership during conference calls providing technical support to ensure issues were resolved and deadlines were met.Confidence and communication skills were gained from chairing meetings and presenting data regularly to senior staff. Multiple other professional skills were gained through training and experience.I wrote and released several technical reports for my tests and projects as well as work instructions for test equipment. Other documents included a detailed new starter’s guide for the test engineering department and a standardised test data layout.
