About Tom Kershaw
As a product marketing manager in B2B software, my job is to get customers to love our products. My biggest impact is at a strategic level in working to ensure that IRIS Education has the right product set with the right features to be the go-to supplier for schools and trusts for education management software. To do this, I work across Product, Sales and Marketing, connecting customer and market insights and directing product go-to-market.A particularly enjoyable creative aspect of my role is shaping market perception through emotionally resonant storytelling (and enabling sales teams and influencers to tell the story), and I love using storytelling frameworks, such as the Storybrand framework promoted by Donald Miller. Naturally, as a B2B Product Marketer, I'm a massive fan of the work of April Dunford (aren’t we all?) and am a firm believer in the notion that effective product positioning underpins all downstream marketing and sales activities. Equally predictable, as a former research scientist, I love integrating theory into practice, and am currently very much into using a research-backed behavioural nudge here and there. And critically for my role, I have a passion for clear and effective messaging. As Morgan Housel put it: 'Morgan Freeman can narrate a grocery list and bring people to tears, while an inarticulate scientist might cure disease and go unnoticed'. I try to be the articulate scientist.Since my time as a teacher and Sixth Form leader, I have never lost my passion for improving life chances through education. I have witnessed first-hand the role that technology has to play in running great schools, so I love that I can bring this passion and experience to bear on a daily basis as the Product Marketing Sector Lead for IRIS Education. Among other things, I am also an experienced project manager (including Agile software development and internal change projects) and operations manager, combining strong leadership backed by professional qualifications with an ability to organise and deploy resources, and manage competing priorities. And I play golf enthusiastically - in spite of my lack of talent!
