Councillor For Willesden Green
CurrentFirst elected in 2014, I continue to represent Willesden Green residents as an elected member of Brent Council.
Cabinet Lead For Community Safety & Engagement
I served for four years as a member of the Cabinet at Brent Council, with a responsibility for crime and safety, community & CVS engagement, and for part of this period, libraries and culture. My focus was political and strategic leadership, policy development, and communicating with the public. I have sought to do this within the framework of fighting for a more equal, inclusive and sustainable society, locally and nationally.I was politically responsible and accountable for a range of services in different periods within this role. These included libraries, culture & heritage, community protection and ASB, licensing and enforcement, community cohesion and engagement, and our nationality and immigration service. As part of my portfolio I provided the political leadership to Brent's successful Borough of Culture bid for 2020 - one of my proudest achievements. I also oversaw a significant fall in violent crime, and a systematic reform of how the council engages with and supports the local voluntary sector.
Senior Policy Officer
Working within our Strategy and Insight directorate, I help the Nursing and Midwifery Council understand its environment, develop its policy positions, and make submissions to consultations and inquiries.Within our team I am currently responsible for tracking and managing our work on consultations and inquiries, auditing and developing our team's stakeholder engagement, and re-imagining how we structure and present our policy (both internally and for the public).
Public Affairs Officer
In April 2015 I took on a new role within Rethink Mental Illness as our Public Affairs Officer. I lead on developing relationships with MPs and political parties, government and opposition, and other state and independent stakeholders such as senior civil servants. I have been working as a lone Public Affairs Officer in a small Campaigns and Policy team, but I help make sure we punch above our weight when it comes to influencing. As a team we have had a massive influence on parity of esteem for mental health, funding, and the general level of prominence of the issue. The role has involved some really exciting PA focussed work - for example, I set up a meeting between the Prime Minister and our local activists, and provided facilitation, planing, and training for them as part of that process. This has led to some clear outcomes such as funding commitments. Since then I have also worked with policy colleagues to prepare senior staff for an appearance at the Work and Pensions Select Committee, seeking to influence work around the disability employment gap.We have also built regular dialogue with ministers, shadow ministers and special advisers responsible for our area, and worked with local Councillors as part of the Mental Health Challenge.I take a key part in the secretariat of the APPG on Mental Health and have facilitated events such as a very successful meeting on reforming the secure care system, which was attended by a number of MPs, a Minister and Shadow Minister, and a range of state, third sector and clinical stakeholders. We run several events like this per year in partnership with Mind and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.During the time I have been here I have also undertaken a project management course - I am very keen to develop project management skills further.
Grants Officer
At the moment I am fundraising in trusts and statutory for a large mental health charity, whose work is enormously inspiring. We fund good stuff. My work has been to win funding and make sure it is used properly. I researched, internally negotiate and build applications to a range of trusts, foundations, and statutory funders. This also means managing grants - making sure that our teams are on budget and on target with projects we have won funding for, reporting back to our funders. I managed relationships with large grant funders such as the Big Lottery Foundation and the Department of Health, as well as negotiating and writing up applications to a wide range of trusts and foundations of all sizes. As of September 2014 I was part of Rethink Mental Illness's Business Development and Innovation Team, helping to turn some of the innovative projects for which we have gained funding into ideas which can help us to build stable income in the future. This job saw a particularly proud professional achievement, which was a win of £2.35M for a project I helped develop known as Step Up, a co-produced project aimed at helping young people living with mental illness to make important life transitions.
Campaign Organiser (Harrow)
I worked as a local campaign organiser for Harrow Labour Group, which varied between 34 and 25 Councillors during my time there. This has also meant working on campaigns for Ken Livingstone, Navin Shah AM, and Gareth Thomas MP. I was responsible for planning and delivery of campaigns. I also ran our website, and dealt with much of our written comms output. Achievements:- We on the local GLA seat with a massively increased majority;- Won both of two byelection campaigns with substantial swings to Labour and increased majorities;- Invested in and upgraded our campaign machinery;- Planned and formally began our campaign for the local elections in 2014.
Campaigns/Fundraising Volunteer
Part time volunteering, and some fundraising work, largely focussed on the YES! campaign in the AV referendum. I also did a little research work afterwards, for example on Lords Reform.
Media And Marketing Manager
Responsible for managing Public Relations and marketing at Tribune, a democratic socialist magazine with a long historical tradition. Previous authors and editors include George Orwell, Aneurin Bevin, Jennie Lee and Michael Foot.I was also responsible for managing aspects of our relationships with supportive advertisers, usually campaigning groups and trade unions. This included developing and agreeing large contracts which formed a significant part of our annual income.
Communications Executive
Multi-client broad communications role involving:- Traditional Public Relations support- Campaign management- Online PR work - Marketing and direct sales.
Editorial Assistant
Exciting role during the start-up phase of LabourList.org, one of the most well read political websites in the UK.I had roles in all of the following:- Press and public relations- Website design / working with design team- Commissioning and editing copy- Organising events- Media monitoring and supporter relations
Junior Account Executive
Trainee Public Affairs role based in Manchester, concentrated on local government and planning.
