Tommy Spence MSW, RSW (he/him/his) is an individual and family therapist who lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He has worked in non-profit, healthcare and group practice settings. Alongside his clinical work, Tommy is an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia School of Social Work and Contract Faculty in the Douglas College Bachelor of Social Work program. Tommy is interested in social constructionist and post-modern therapies, particularly Narrative Therapy.While Tommy has practiced in many settings and appreciates working with all types of people, he is most well-known for his work with young people, people experiencing challenges related to substance use and people experiencing the effects of anxiety and depression.Tommy’s teaching interests include finding creative ways to co-construct collaborative learning environments, supporting students to translate theory into experience near ways of understanding and practicing and creating opportunities for student lived experience to be centered in the classroom. Tommy is also interested in supporting new practitioners and frontline workers to develop ways of practicing that fit with their ethics and to foster collective work cultures that sustain well-being in frontline social service environments.
