I have lots of college degrees in STEM and education, four of them to be exact, but more importantly, I have the experience of over 40 years of adventures in the American education system, not counting my own time as a K-16 student. I’ve been a day camp counselor, a substitute teacher, a high school science and math teacher, a graduate student, editor of a state science teachers journal, science methods instructor, grant reviewer, grant writer, grant manager, reviewer of academic standards, district science coordinator, conference coordinator, professional development facilitator, consultant, fundraiser, national award winner, devil’s advocate, parent of private/public school kids since the mid-90’s, dissertation committee member, mentor, member of boards of directors, keynote speaker, and other things I barely remember. Like the degrees, the nouns above describe me and do not define me. I have learned quite a bit over these four decades from amazing successes, spectacular fails, dogged determination and dumb luck. These all are great teachers, and I am fortunate to be their messenger.
