What I do:I help teachers raise the aspirations of their students towards a specific career goal within the NHS. I show them 50+ careers that can be accessed with levels 9-4 a GCSE and are not just doctors or nurses, to prevent the loss of talent if students want to become a doctor, but don't quite get the grades.How do I do this:We visit schools and colleges across the UK with our mobile hospital, running workshops where students get to use REAL medical kit in the classroom to discover the dozens of amazing careers they can go into. During a workshop they get to use an ultrasound machine, try key hole surgery, take blood from a fake arm, record an ECG and take a photo of the inside of their eye! As a result students get a better understanding of the careers accessible to them in the NHS and what they need to achieve at GCSE, BTEC, A-Level, Uni or Apprenticeship routes to reach that career goal. Ultimately we are supporting the supply of enthusiastic scientists and medics into the NHS which benefits us all. Jade and Liz were fantastic."My BackgroundI studied Human Physiology and Exercise Science for my first degree before moving onto a teaching support role at the University of Wolverhampton. I then moved to Birmingham City University as a lecturer and course director, teaching Nurses and Paramedics all about the wonders of the human body. During this role I also completed a PGCE in HE and a PG Diploma in Medical Toxicology. However, the entrepreneurial bug eventually took hold and since 2009 I have been visiting schools with my mobile hospital to help inspire the next generation of medical professionals.
