Working within the technical department as a Level 2 Watchmaker, I’m able to exercise and build upon my training from Geneva. The level of experience within the department has really helped to hone my skills and allowed me to become a productive member of the team.Daily responsibilities include:• Service and repair Level 2 watches. o Responsible for the repair of modern references dating from 1980 to the present day, this includes a multitude of references, each with their own casing requirements. o Repairs are carried out in line with the company’s rigorous guidelines. Each movement is individually evaluated and disassembled methodically, inspecting the aesthetic and functional condition of each part both in situ as part of a sub-assembly and as an individual component. o After cleaning, the movement is reassembled, oiled and adjusted to be within the tolerances stipulated by the company. o After casing, the now complete watch is scrutinized by an independent and meticulous QC department.• Split the bracelets of any incoming watches and to perform an initial diagnostic on quartz models. o Splitting of bracelets is required upon receipt of pieces to allow serial number checks to be performed as part of the authenticity process. o Quartz models are subjected to a short diagnostic process to check their function and to give any recommendations for the estimators.• Ensure the ERP/SAP database is accurately updated. o Updating the ERP/SAP database with both accurate location scanning and notes regarding individual pieces.As well as these responsibilities, I have also conducted a technical talk on the history of Patek Philippe in Brazil and the Gondolo model to both members of the workshop and the sales/management team. I also wrote ‘The Apprentice's Guide to Genève’ on behalf of the company, to aid subsequently recruited apprentices settling into the city.

One of three UK apprentices selected to study with the International Customer Services department at Patek Philippe’s home in Geneva.Completed a 3000-hour course with topics including:• Micro-mechanics, including sawing, filing, drilling, turning on a Schaublin 70 lathe, black polishing and tempering of steel.• General history of watchmaking and Patek Philippe.• Core principles of watchmaking.• Theoretical classes of chronographs, complicated calendars (annual, perpetual, centennial, etc), chiming mechanisms. • Initially trained with ETA calibres, including the 6497, 7001, 2671, 2826 and 2893.• Progressed onto PP calibres, including the 16-250, 215, 240, 26-330, 315 and 324 (with calendar and moonphase).Part of the apprenticeship included the production of a school watch where the movement was to display several of the hand finishing techniques employed by Patek Philippe in their calibres. Some of these techniques included:• Piercing of bridges from an ébauche.• Hand bevelling and polishing.• Drilling and positioning of new bridge feet/pins and plugging of unused holes in main plate.• Mix of finishing techniques including, sand blasting, perlage, straight and circular graining, black polishing, snail graining.• Vibrating and studding of custom balance spring onto a screw balance.
