About Thomas Wild
My research focus is on identifying holistic solutions to complex systems challenges that occur at the intersection of disciplines. I have particular interest in developing and applying novel modeling tools to facilitate decision making in the context of coupled human and natural systems undergoing change. My research has contributed to identifying and mitigating food-energy-water tradeoffs and conflicts, developing sustainable hydropower systems, managing fluvial and stormwater quality, and equitably sharing transboundary resources. I have extensive international development experience related to water and energy infrastructure, including multiple projects in Asia and Latin America. In these projects I often served in a stakeholder engagement and capacity building role, training large multidisciplinary groups to understand and use complex modeling tools.
Listed skills include Water Resources, Civil Engineering, Water Quality, and Environmental Engineering.

Intern
- Coordinated with pump suppliers and performed system hydraulic analyses to recommend appropriate pumping schemes to be integrated into two different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
- Used GIS and TR-55 to help conduct an analysis of the capacity of, and required additions to, storm water infrastructure in and around a WWTP in Hagerstown, MD.
- Responsible for operating the Baltimore City Smoketesting Hotline, which was established to help residents acquire information about smoke tests being performed on their sewer systems.
Intern
- Prepared suggestions regarding selection of laboratory instruments and online analyzers required for process control and calibration at Patapsco WWTP in Baltimore, MD.
- Analyzed and prepared WWTP effluent data, and recorded meaningful trends in the data.
Technician 1-Aa
- Reviewed District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority’s (DCWASA’s) design drawings and specifications manuals to identify deficiencies and perform quantity takeoff estimates.
- Prepared valve shutdown plans, which directed DCWASA maintenance crews to the appropriate locations of valves to be closed in emergency situations.
Junior Technician
- Participated in research conducted at the DCWASA Fort Reno Reservoir to identify the optimum mixture of chemicals to treat the water supply while reducing harmful lead decay.
- Operated the lead and copper electrochemistry and pipe loop experimentation, monitored experimental conditions, and collected and analyzed samples.
- Conducted field surveying for DCWASA to verify existence of lead pipe replacement sites, measure dimensions of replacement sites, and identify types of excavation materials.
Engineering Intern
- Populated a water main break database for DCWASA used for plotting main break trends.
- Aided engineers in inspecting as-built drawings for the prevalence of lead service lines.
Intern
- Participated in research conducted by a team of scientists at the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service regarding the ability of algal turf scrubbers to recover nitrogen and phosphorous from animal manure runoff. Algal.
- Maintained and monitored experimental conditions in the scrubbers, and collected and analyzed samples of algae and effluent.
