The Appalachian Transition Fellowship is a year-long, full-time, paid program designed for 15 emerging community leaders who are committed to working in Central Appalachia for the economic transition of the region. Central Appalachia is defined as West Virginia, Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Tennessee, Appalachian Ohio and Western North.

CMOP is a partnership of progressive, grassroots, community-based organizations in the Southeast who’ve joined forces to increase our capacity for using media coverage as an organizing tool. With CMOP, I led trainings on using new and social media in southern organizing and consulted one-on-one with community groups to develop strong media strategies.

At SACE and Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment, I research public utilities (municipal and cooperative) that distribute TVA power and work with member-residents to gather support for renewable energy and energy efficiency programs at the distributor and TVA level.

Under the UNG Institute for Environmental Spatial Analysis, I provided GIS support for Environmental Studies courses and organized campus-wide environmental programming concentrating on public education and outreach, climate change, and food systems under the IESA Colloquium Series.

SURREF is an organization that works with rural black landowners in the Alabama Black Belt region to support community-based tourism. In addition to administrative duties, I collaborated with community members to develop a community-based spatial planning process. This tool was a GIS used for participatory monitoring and evaluation of local efforts.
