I was asked by a mutual friend and headhunter to look at a carrier that had found themselves in a unique situation. After meeting with and describing my plan for the transition, the ownership asked me to again relocate, this time to the beautiful city of Knoxville, TN. Here I met my greatest challenge of reinventing a carrier with one customer being paid for all miles, to a competitor in a much more challenging market. Starting with a customer base of less than a dozen contracted customers, the challenge of building a network from scratch was one that I found extremely rewarding. After a successful transition and several years of operating successfully in the truckload market, the ownership reached a point where they could retire and sold Teton to a much larger carrier. After my success with Sitton Motor Lines I was approached to become part of a Management team tasked with getting Willis Shaw ( a truckload reefer carrier) and division of Comcar industries out of the red, and back to a profitable and viable division of the parent company. We achieved this goal in under 2 years.

Sitton Motor Lines was running at a 109 operating ratio, and the ownership was concerned that if there were not drastic changes, the company was moving toward bankruptcy. Dick Sitton, the President and C.E.O. of the company, encouraged me to move to Joplin and take over the day-to-day operations of the company. Within 18 months we had started to turn a profit, and in my last year running the company we set both revenue and profit margin records.

As Transport America's Northeast Regional Manager, I was given the honor of opening up Canada for the first time. I was also deeply involved in helping to write the outline for the original (very successful)I.P.O. that the company launched in 1991.

I started my trucking career with National Freight, Inc., a New Jersey based truckload carrier, just after the end of regulation. I went from a night dispatcher to night supervisor; day shift operations to days shift operations manager, then terminal manager. With the untimely loss of my original mentor Dave Scott, I was temporarily promoted to Northeast Regional Manager.
