P/Cve Consultant To Uk Government

London, United Kingdom

Through Breakthrough Media, I was part of a groundbreaking partnership between government, the private sector and civil society to develop strategic communications programs around countering the threat of terrorism and violent extremism in the 2010s. Primarily, this was the threat posed by ISIS and its recruitment of young people in the UK getting them to travel illegally to Iraq and Syria. Later, the challenge posed by the extreme Right became increasingly important. My role was to work with teams of civil servants, private sector consultants and civil society partners to develop communications strategies to intervene between online and offline terrorist recruitment activity and the individuals at risk of being radicalised. My role at the outset was to identity civil society partners and other actors we could trust to safeguard young people and build resilience in communities. This involved working on the ground in challenging areas as well as having a deep understanding of the ideologies and mindsets of all those involved.During this time, I co-authored a book on non-violent Islamist extremism in the UK titled 'The Battle for British Islam'.Most of this activity with Breakthrough came under a UK Home Office contract under the Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism which has since been rebranded as Homeland Security.

Jul 2013 - Apr 2019

Head Of Networks

The Network Hub

London, United Kingdom

An innovative program that took the UK's Prevent counter-terrorism model into the European Union. This was mainly funded by RICU, part of the UK Home Office, but certain activities were co-funded or supported by EU governments. I was involved in several activities. These included a campaign in Finland to promote the country's National Action Plan on countering radicalisation; a sports-based youth initiative in Paris Saint Denis and several events to convene civil society groups from across Europe.

Nov 2017 - Mar 2019

Director Of Strategy And Development

London, United Kingdom

Director of Strategy at a long-established strategic communications company with blue-chip corporate clients across Europe and strong relationships with the UK government - in particular the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. I worked closely with CTN's chairman Lord Watson on developing democracy building initiatives for the Commonwealth. This included organising a massive, top level delegation from Nigeria to visit London on Commonwealth Day. As a result, my contact book still includes former Nigerian presidents, senators, governors and tribal chiefs. I also liaised with and visited the University of Virginia and William & Mary College in the US to support youth democracy programs - an area that remains of great interest and more pertinent than ever.

Jun 2011 - Sep 2014

Head Of Content At Cantos/Brunswick

Back in 2001, Cantos (part of Brunswick PR) was a mould breaking proposition - helping large corporates, government and other organisations relay their messaging on camera direct to the desktop. I led a group of producers and consultants in developing the filming and online operation. As social media channels came to the fore in the mid-2000s, I worked with HM Treasury and the then Chancellor of the Exchequer Rt Hon Alistair Darling to create a YouTube channel shining a light on the everyday workings at Number 11. I also developed bite-sized TV programmes, mainly around business topics, and sometimes in conjunction with editorial titles like the Wall Street Journal and the Investors Chronicle (where I had previously been a journalist).Increasingly, I was involved in pioneering video/digital thought leadership programs - using online to interact with target audiences through discussions on key topics. This included creating content for Philips around global health. For nearly ten years, I worked closely with The Economist Intelligence Unit on its video content co-presenting a monthly online programme called "Global Forecast".

Jan 2001 - Jun 2011

City Editor

During the dot-com boom at the turn of the century, I was involved in setting up a satellite TV channel from scratch. Shareholders included the 60s pop star Adam Faith. This was streamlined, live TV on a tight budget. I devised and produced the daily three hour breakfast programme "Daybreak" and the daily afternoon chat show "Square Mile", presented by LBC presenter Petrie Hosken.

Nov 1999 - Jan 2001

Senior Broadcast Journalist

Bbc

I was part of the team at the start of News24 - which later became the BBC rolling news channel. Working with amazing presenters like Jane Hill to put out hours of news content round the clock. We were also trialling digital technology for the rest of the news operation. The Money Programme (BBC2) - I originated and produced several reports including a major investigation into agricultural fraud in Italy and Spain; stress in the modern office and the financial crisis in Asia.BBC World TV's World Business Report (BBC World TV) - I produced several newscasters on this programme including CNN's Richard Quest and Al Jazeera's Adrian Finighan. Breaking stories included tracking down fugitive Asil Nadir to a hotel in Istanbul. Also worked on BBC1's Business Breakfast and BBC2's Working Lunch with Adrian Chiles.
