Gm / Coo
When I founded Dynamic Ratings Inc. in 2002, I had the opportunity to create a new business from the ground-up. I listen to customers and determined what their real business challenges are and then worked to create custom solutions that fit their needs. Our relatively small size provides us the ability to be more responsive than other businesses in this niche. The Wilson Group ownership provided us with the financial backing to support the rapid growth. For the first few years, I wore multiple hats as we built our reputation in the industry. As the business grew, I was able to reach back into my work history and cherry pick the best-of-the-best employees to join our team. Hiring the best employees fueled our growth and established Dynamic Ratings as both a preferred supplier to major utilities, and a preferred employer within the industry. Initially, I reported to the GM for Dynamic Ratings in Asia. In 2008, this was revised where each Dynamic Ratings business (US and Asia) reported independently to the Managing Director of Wilson. In 2014, the management of Dynamic Ratings global operations was consolidated and I assume the management responsibility for the global business. The global consolidation has provided us the ability to standardize procedures, leverage specific areas of expertise in each location and optimize our cost.
General Manager - Wes Services
Once I completed my MBA, I accepted a position within the same parent company (Waukesha Electric was also a General Signal Company). I was hired with the responsibility of converting the service business from a support group to a profit center. We grew this section of the business both organically and through acquisition. We acquired High Voltage Supply and Roberts Transformer Service and folded these businesses into the service group. As we grew the business I transitioned to a Sales Manager role for the WES Service group. The most valuable thing I gained from this role was an appreciation for how utilities operate and the realities associated with substation work. The policy at WES was to always have an employee on site to supervise the assembly of the transformers. This enabled us to proactively address issues before it had an impact to the utility. Having a presence at site and bringing that information back to fix or improve product and process earned WES a reputation of being the best in the industry. While in this role, I was introduced to the Dynamic Ratings product which was developed by Wilson Transformer in Australia. As the power transformer industry was in decline following the 9/11 and I became one of the workforce reduction casualties, I reached out to the Wilson Transformer group and proposed that they "hire me" to start a new business for them in North America.
Subcontractor (Part Time - Nights & Weekends)
A friend of mine started a business building diesel generator sets and knowing my experience with paralleling switchgear, he asked me to design and build systems for him. I set up a panel wiring area in my basement and we (my wife, neighbor, high school buddy ...) built control panels when systems were needed. I would then take vacation and fly to the Philippines, Chile or wherever needed to commission them. We only did a few systems, but they all worked well and it was a great experience.
Application Engineering Mgr
Blue M Electric manufactured thermal processing equipment for the semiconductor industry and many other applications. This job enabled be to transition "to the dark side". Yes, I moved from engineering to the sales side of the fence. Learning what customers needed and dreaming up product solutions to address those needs was a lot of fun. I was supported by a great team of engineers and production people who could turned these conceptual solutions into great products. While working at Lindberg - Blue M, I leveraged their tuition reimbursement program to get my MBA.
Engineering Manager
I started as an intern, while still attending MSOE. This quickly escalated into a full time role while trying to squeeze in time to finish my remaining electrical engineering courses. Energy Dynamics Inc (EDI) was named as one of the Milwaukee Metro future 50 companies due the dramatic growth. When I joined EDI, the annual revenue was $4.8m and when I left as Engineering Manager, we had grown to $18m. Products included Diesel Electric Generator Sets and Paralleling Switchgear systems. I left EDI just a few months before their acquisition.
