Profile bio

About Timothy Colegate

During my career in the arts industry to date, I have worked in three different regional venues in an artistic programming capacity with each organisation providing its own new learning. This has given me an in-depth understanding of the different considerations that accompany meeting the expectations of different organisations’ stakeholders. This has provided me with experience in multi-auditoria and single space venues; venues operated by the local authority and those managed by independent charitable trusts; organisations in receipt of no regular public subsidy and those supported via grant funding, particularly as an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation; and organisations with different degrees of focus and scale with regard to its artistic programme.Over this time, I have also learned a great deal about what is important to me when it comes to working for an arts organisation:- Artistic Experiences: Ultimately, the arts should be accessible to all and those who wish to participate should have access to a diverse range of quality opportunities for engagement. This could be through a varied received programme, producing new work, and progressive learning and participation and/or artist development schemes.- Organisational Strategy: While smooth operational delivery is important, I get the most satisfaction from viewing the organisation holistically when considering how to achieve its goals and striving to fulfil its vision and mission.- Commercial Sustainability: As we face economic challenges, it has never been more important to ensure financial resilience regardless of an organisation’s funding model. While creativity might lie at its core, a robust commercial strategy is how organisations can continue to deliver cultural experiences long into the future. It is only with a commercial head that we can have a charitable heart.- Human Resource Development: As distinct from a HR function, I refer to this in terms of personnel development and wellbeing. Having a team of staff who feel valued, capable, and supported results in a team who are motivated and this is key to the organisation achieving its goals.

Listed skills include Drama, Musical Theatre, Stage, Theatre, and 17 others.

Head Of Programming

Poole

As a member of the senior management team, I lead the programming department at Lighthouse - Poole's Centre for the Arts, overseeing a broad and diverse artistic programme across a number of spaces within the facility. Lighthouse is one of the UK's largest regional arts centres consisting of a Concert Hall, Theatre, Studio, Cinema, and Art Gallery. Function Rooms are also available for external hire. Lighthouse's artistic output encompasses concerts and stand-up comedy, mid-scale touring theatre, and studio-scale work - some of which is the result of support from Lighthouse in its R&D stage. There is also a film and visual art programme too.Lighthouse hosts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra within its walls as a resident orchestra and likewise, prides itself on supporting local artists develop their craft and create work where it's able to do so.In addition to the received programme, I oversee Lighthouse's progressive creative engagement strategy featuring learning & participation and artist development strands.

Sep 2019 - Jul 2024

Producer & Programming Manager

Wolverhampton, United Kingdom

I joined Wolverhampton Grand Theatre at a particularly exciting and progressive period in its development. I was responsible for ensuring that a high quality programme of received productions was maintained and to drive forward the theatre's ambitions of producing its own work.

Oct 2016 - Sep 2019

Artistic Programmer

Llandudno, United Kingdom

Venue Cymru is the largest arts and conference complex in Wales outside of Cardiff, housing both a 1,500 seat theatre and a concert arena with a standing capacity of 2,500. I was responsible for planning and managing the artistic programme at Venue Cymru, a role which required me to work on several diverse projects simultaneously, negotiating competitive deals with visiting promoters and producers and overseeing visiting shows from conception to fruition. To do this productively, I use the Artifax booking software. The breadth of the programme is vast in order to cater for the maximum number of people, with the focus being on artistic quality as opposed to quantity. Through aiming to remain as accessible as possible for patrons, my target is to ensure growth in audience numbers by implementing a strong and varied programme of work throughout the year.It is vital to maintain strong relationships with promoters and producers and make sure that all contractual correspondence is completed satisfactorily. I must also undertake my role while working within the financial parameters set by the General Manager.

Dec 2014 - Oct 2016

Production Intern

London, United Kingdom

I provided support to the production coordinators on numerous large-scale West End and touring shows including: Wicked, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dirty Dancing, Blithe Spirit, The Weir, Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies and the upcoming Shrek. My given responsibilities ranged from constructing contracts to managing house seats and assisting in planning and running press nights and show-related events and hospitality. On behalf of Playful, I liaised with external parties such as marketing and PR companies, talent agencies and other producers. Often, I was the first point of contact for visitors to the office and also for those calling in on the phone. I undertook research on a general basis for the Producers and also more specifically in terms of travel and accommodation for touring productions. I took the minutes accurately for the weekly internal company meetings, distributing them promptly, and booked and set up the meeting rooms for various meetings as per the requests of those involved regarding refreshments and IT needs. I made sure that the office was kept presentable at all times and monitor supplies for both the kitchen and office stationery.
