About Tyler Farr
As a dedicated and innovative researcher, I have amassed a wealth of experience across several esteemed institutions, showcasing my commitment to advancing the frontiers of renewable energy and space exploration technologies. My journey began with undergraduate research projects at UNC Greensboro and NC State University, where I notably contributed to the development of underwater ocean current turbines for power harvesting in the Gulf Stream. This early exposure to renewable energy solutions set the stage for my subsequent endeavors. At the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, I further honed my research skills and creativity. Participating in the Intern Innovative Idea Competition, I distinguished myself by placing in the top three in a poster competition and earning the opportunity to present in a Shark Tank-style pitch to the board of directors. This experience underscored my ability to communicate complex ideas effectively and engage with high-level stakeholders. My academic pursuits then led me to Georgia Tech, where I initially focused on solar thermochemistry and concentrated solar power. My work here involved the innovative synthesis and characterization of metal oxides, developing them as a reusable redox agent for ammonia production at atmospheric pressures – a groundbreaking approach in the field.Shifting gears to space exploration, I contributed to NASA's SSERVI projects. My tasks included characterizing water vapor diffusion through packed beds of lunar regolith simulants in vacuum conditions, a critical study for future lunar missions. Advancing my research, I undertook a thesis project that involved using a high-flux solar simulator to experimentally sublimate icy lunar regolith simulants. This project was complemented by my work in 3D computational modeling, where I utilized X-ray tomography scans to create detailed models of lunar soil sublimation. My academic and professional experiences reflect a deep commitment to advancing renewable energy and space technology, underscored by strong analytical skills and a passion for interdisciplinary research.
Listed skills include Mathematica, Autocad, Autodesk Inventor, Matlab, and 4 others.

Graduate Research Assistant
Current
Undergraduate Research Assistant
I was brought on to resume my previous work with the Engineering Mechanics and Space Systems Lab to develop our vertical axis autorotating turbine for hydrokinetic energy harvesting in the gulf stream. My primary role for this project was to take the lead in designing and building a series of modular underwater prototype coaxial systems that are able to measure mechanical power extracted from the current. My other responsibilities were to have me assist with the experimentation of the systems in the water tunnel by running the experiments, collecting data, and analyzing the results.
Research Assistant
Worked as a research assistant for MIT Lincoln Laboratories in group 109 studying and modelling aero-optical aberration patterns of LWIR systems.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
Working with the Engineering Mechanics and Space Systems Lab to develop a new gulf stream energy harvesting system. This system utilizes smart Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) to track and follow the shifting gulf stream currents for a means of maximized energy collection. My roles include helping to developing the hydrodynamic computer models used in the simulation and analysis of the system's propellers. I also assist with the design, fabrication, and building of the system as well as help to conduct the experiments in the water tunnel.
Research Assistant
I worked for Dr. Venkat in his aerospace labratories on campus. My primary project was to help design and build a device that can vaporize liquid diesel fuel that can be used in high altitude combustion for jet engine flameout solutions.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
I was tasked with understanding and defining the optical distortions we experienced in the supersonic wind tunnel. I then was able to model the system and rays within Matlab and other ray tracing software to develop an array of lenses to correct for the optical distortions.
Mechanical Engineering Co-Op
Worked as a project engineer/manager during my first co-op rotation at Patheon (now Thermofisher Technology). My projects involved helping to designing the plant's new chilled water system, red line drawings for one of the packaging lines and the As-Built's for the plant's and US's first continuous manufacturing suite.
Research Assistant
Assisted Dr. Yun Jing with Auralization project in collaboration with Virtual St. Paul’s Cathedral Project with a focus on virtual environmental acoustic modelling.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
I was responsible for designing and building a large fluid tank capable of precisely rotating various fluids at extremely high rates as well as uniformly heating it close to the liquids boiling point while being able to capture all aspects of the turbulent motion. This involved making models in Autodesk Inventor. It also required me to design and build a workstation and fluid tank capable of withstanding the temperatures and rigor of the experiments. Had to come up with a way to heat the fluids without interfering with the fluid’s dynamics in any physical way. I was also tasked with finding and figuring out how to attach the motor and power source without interfering with the fluid dynamics again. And all of this done on an extremely tight research budget.
