Former Editor In Charge of The Week, the country’s leading English weekly newsmagazine, based in Cochin and recently relocated to Bangalore, where I am associated with www.citizenmatters.in as consulting editor.Had worked with The Week for 35 years, 29 of them as the magazine’s editor, during which the magazine reached its highest ever circulation as per ABC. As editor, had overall responsibility for content selection and presentation, managing an all India editorial team of 90+ journalists. Born and brought up in Delhi, took a brief stab at engineering at the IIT, Kanpur, but switched to journalism in 1974. My first assignment was as reporter cum subeditor at Motherland, a daily run by the then Jan Sangh party (now the BJP). The paper was shut down during the Emergency. Since then, worked in India Today Delhi and Hindustan Times as a subeditor and covering sports. Was part of the Prime Minsiter’s media delegation when Vajpayee visited South Africa and Beijing. Was also a special invitee of the South African government prior to their staging their world cup. Was part of a media delegation from developing countries to the US as a special invitee. Besides organising the news desk and setting up work systems for ideation and implementation of cover and other stories, also did a number of detailed cover stories on a wide range of subjects, business, politics, sports, science and cinema.Main interests are reading and travel.
