Do I talk about myself, or the work I do? In my line of work, my voice is so often silenced to create space for that of my client.I am a ghostwriter, and my goal is to help each individual I work with find their voice through the written word. To do this, I rely on active listening. Sure, you can google 'active listening' and come up with a list of strategies and techniques to become a more effective communicator, but active listening for me goes beyond well-timed nods or sustained eye contact. You see, I have spent the better part of my adult life traveling, learning another language, and living overseas. Active listening has become something more than a communication skill for me. It is a survival tool. It is imperative that I understand the subtleties of language, the intent conveyed by slight shifts in tone. This skill has become a passion as I try to understand the depths of the world around me as reflected by the cultures I find myself surrounded by. When it comes to my writing, I put this skill to work. I interview each client and through active conversation and engaged listening, I get to the root of what it is they are dying to say. And then I write it down for them, taking myself out of the equation. What is left is a text that is truly born of that person's voice. Sure, I could dedicate myself to writing original pieces, published under my own name. I certainly have some stuff up my sleeve and in the works. But for now, my passion is in helping others express themselves through the written word. There are so many talented people out there, with relevant, fascinating, and important information they need to share. Being the surrogate to their creative expression brings me deep satisfaction. Creatively, I am driven by the joy my clients feel when they recognize their voice in my writing. Intellectually, I am inspired by the endless learning required to perform my job well. Emotionally, I am deeply satisfied to have found my niche in the world where I can put to work the diverse lessons, skills, and talents I have picked up throughout the course of my rather unconventional life.
