El Reno Tribune and Mustang News were sister publications at the time I worked there. My work for both newspapers overlapped during the seven years I worked for the company.I covered a wide range of news at the El Reno Tribune, from city council to school board and from county government to features, crime and general news. I also served as a photographer and laid out/designed the paper, along with our sports editor. During my tenure, I wrote many breaking stories concerning a wide variety of topics and excelled at research and in-depth, as well as spot, reporting.I was responsible for the majority of the special sections editorial content, and we won several awards for those during the years I served in this capacity.I was transferred back to the Mustang News, our sister publication, in September 2013, where my duties remained the same, but were expanded. I continued to write and design/lay out the Tribune, while being responsible for all writing, editing, layout and design of the paper's "A" section and the majority of general news photos. I attended meetings, events and wrote feature and news stories; I also edited all submitted copy, from columns to obituaries, as well as reworking and expanding on press releases.
  • Mustang News
    Editor/Reporter
    Mustang News Aug 2007 - Aug 2014
    Mustang, Oklahoma
I began as a reporter for the Mustang News, where I covered city council, county government and general news and features before my transfer to the El Reno Tribune in August 2008. I was transfered back to Mustang in September 2013 and immediately took on the duties and responsibilities of editor, although I was not formally named to the position until January 2014.During my tenure, I completed a major redesign of the newspaper, expanding our coverage area and electing to focus more on community news. I also worked hard to increase our name recognition, attempting to distance the News from a long-standing practice of duplicate coverage with another local newspaper. As part of these eforts, I increased local coverage of community members and events (such as local Special Athletes and our high school band) and began an "outreach" program with our local school district In that endeavor, I spearheaded several proposals, including our assistance in restarting the high school newspaper, which had been dormant for some time (this, in fact, came to pass after I left the News). Finally, I worked to expand and improve our online presence. News colleagues reported the laper hadn't had a working website in several years; I designed and maintained the site currently used by the paper (although no longer to its full potential). Also, under my direction, other social media was expanded, including our visibility - on Facebook, company "likes" increased from 703 to more than 3,200 during my tenure.
