In August 2022, I joined Asimov as the Director of Community. With this role, I’ll be working on a variety of topics and activities that focus on engaging with our company and customer communities, as well as the synthetic biology community at large.I earned my doctorate in marine microbiology from the University of Rhode Island in 2010. I joined the CIDAR lab under the guidance of Prof. Douglas Densmore at Boston University as a postdoctoral researcher in synthetic biology and later served as the Executive Director of the Center of Synthetic Biology at BU. During my time at Boston University, I mentored and trained over 40 undergraduate and graduate students and also ran the university’s iGEM teams for four years. I joined the iGEM Foundation in the spring of 2015 as a Science and Technology Fellow, was later promoted to the Director of Technology, and finally served as the Director of the Competition. In this role, I oversaw all aspects of the iGEM Competition and worked to ensure that every team from around the world had a successful and fulfilling iGEM experience.

In this role, I oversaw all aspects of the iGEM Competition and worked to ensure that every team from around the world has a successful and fulfilling iGEM experience. This included working with all of the Competition committees to coordinate their efforts to help the iGEM teams, as well as working with various staff members to design and execute on various projects throughout the year. The culmination of the competition was the Giant Jamboree, a multi-day event to celebrate the work done by the teams. As Director of the Competition, I helped shape the design and theme of the event each year and worked with our team to run the Jamboree from behind the scenes.

As both the Science and Technology Fellow and Director of Technology for iGEM, I explored various technologies from wet lab protocols to software tools with the purpose of helping the iGEM teams succeed with their projects. While I held these technology roles, I brought PhytoBricks, a Type IIS assembly standard, into the competition as the first new assembly standard to be accepted for submitting new parts to the Registry of Biological Parts. I also served as one of the main points of contact for troubleshooting molecular biology protocols with the teams around the world.

I was a postdoctoral research associate in Dr. Doug Densmore's synthetic biology lab in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University. This cross-disciplinary group composed of both wet and computational lab members focuses on the CAD tools needed for synthetic biology. As the leader of the wet lab team, one of my major goals was to construct genetic circuits in E. coli for testing the software tools developed in the computational lab. I was also responsible for the day-to-day running of the biological laboratory, which includes training incoming graduate and undergraduate students, ordering lab supplies as needed, and maintaining our equipment. I was also the Laboratory Safety Coordinator for the Densmore lab and was responsible for the safety of all lab members who work within our biological lab. Finally, I was the main adviser for the Boston University 2011-2014 iGEM teams and was responsible for recruiting new team members and securing support from various companies for our wet lab project this summer.

Designed and conducted various molecular and culture-based experiments in the laboratory and at sea to study unicellular cyanobacteria capable of utilizing nitrate. During my tenure in Dr. Bethany Jenkins' laboratory, I went to sea three times to collect environmental samples and was also responsible for training undergraduate students in molecular techniques. Thesis title: Using Molecular Tools to Identify Unicellular Cyanobacteria with the Potential to Utilize Nitrate in Oligotrophic Oceans
