Student Services Analyst Sr., Career & Transfer Center
I am currently the manager of the career and transfer center where I assist students, staff, faculty, and community members with career and university connection, exploration, preparation, and growth. I do this in the following ways: 1) encourage connections to mentors on and off campus2) facilitate partnerships with university transfer representatives3) promote and guide current and prospective students with "deep dives" into majors, programs, careers, and institutions 4) assist with resume creation and review, preparation for interviews, job searches, and university applications for admissions and/or scholarships5) provide professional and personal growth opportunities via partnerships with stakeholders on and off campus.Currently, I oversee a team of six student workers in the career and transfer center who are tasked with creating engaging classroom and institute presentations, assisting with workshop delivery and event planning, and forging and maintaining relationships with their peers to encourage use of the center and our services.
Professor Of English
Arts & Composition Adjunct FacultyI teach both first-year composition I and first-year composition II (ENG101 and ENG102, respectively) using culturally responsive teaching and dynamic themes to engage all students regardless of background. My students approach the prescribed district competencies in a variety of ways including guided research essays, creative writing, group work, and creative projects. Previous themes have included villains, science, pseudoscience, cultural celebrations, and the hero's journey.
Student Services Analyst - Stem
I served as the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Analyst at Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) under a case management/guided pathways model. My role included connecting new, continuing, and prospective students to program pathways, faculty, university partners, and various support resources on the EMCC campus. I worked closely with faculty and the EMCC STEM Center of Excellence to provide timely support and encouragement to STEM students as well as creating pathway plans that will allow them to complete their programs successfully. In addition, I provided support for grant programs that partner with S-STEM, WAESO, and NSF; volunteered my time for STEM outreach events around the valley; and mentored students as they navigated their time at EMCC and beyond. My students went on to receive the Maricopa Chancellor's Civic Leadership Medallion, the All-USA Scholarship, and gained admission to ASU's Barrett Honors College; others were selected to participate in the NASA NCAS program, Undergraduate Research on Microbial Symbioses at the U of A, and the UCLA Pre-Medical Enrichment Program (PREP).
Student Services Specialist
Initially, this position centered on revamping the new student orientation and ensuring that all markers for new students were met. While creating the new framework, I focused on three main questions that all new students, regardless of their academic or career plans, wanted to know: 1) What classes do I need? 2) How do I register for them? 3) How do I pay for them? These questions guided my creation and implementation of the Required Orientation, Advisement, and Registration session (ROAR) that all new students had to attend as part of the enrollment process. In early 2019, as Maricopa and EMCC adopted the guided pathways model, the position pivoted to providing more one-on-one advising in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and health science fields. The STEM and Health Science advisement team (myself and one other advisor) set out to change the narrative of STEM advising on the campus by being actively involved in our students' pathways, getting faculty involved in the process, and creating content to be disseminated to the campus and community.
Guest Service Attendant
This position was for, essentially, a lead cashier. I was in charge of overseeing the team of cashiers, providing backup as needed, tendering returns, dealing with complaints, and ensuring that guests had an overall enjoyable experience while in our store. I transferred from the Turkey Creek store in Knoxville, TN to the Peoria Crossings store in Peoria, AZ in March of 2017 and was then also in charge of all cash office duties including counting and balancing all tills and self-checkout machines, and preparing deposits.
Testing Technician
I was the front desk worker in Testing Services. This position required that I verify identities for each potential tester and ensure the integrity of the Maricopa Testing Services. We offered Accuplacer placement testing for all incoming students, as well as the CLEP, CELSA (ESL placement), and Foreign Language Placement for German and Spanish. We also provided proctored testing for institutions outside of the Maricopa Colleges. On top of my duties within Testing Services, I also assisted in the creation of the Online Priority Advisement Workshop (OPAW) alongside the advisement department and was part of hiring and training committees for the Welcome Center student workers.
Student Services Technician
This position was considered special projects. As such, the biggest project I worked on was as a part of the team that reviewed current and prior military students’ college credits (including transfer and military credits) in accordance with Department of Veteran Affairs regulations pursuant to mandatory VA audit of files. EMCC completed the audit with 100% compliance. Additionally, I piloted an online file management system for the advisement team to digitize student paperwork that is still in effect as of May 2021.
Student Services Specialist
I was a work-study student and then moved into a part time role at the Welcome Center in Enrollment Services, mainly servicing advisement, testing, counseling, disability resources, and financial aid. I was the front line person for every person who walked into the enrollment building and, as such, was expected to keep a friendly and personable demeanor at all times. I was in charge of multiple calendars and scheduling first via Outlook and then Google Calendar. As that front line person I was also expected to know a little bit about everything on campus and connected with various departments to ensure that my information remained accurate. During this time, I cultivated strong relationships with coworkers in each of the departments within Student Affairs in order to determine where there were weak areas of communication and worked hard to bridge those gaps. Additionally, I developed new processes for the Welcome Center to maximize our effort when working with students, staff, and faculty.
Shift Director
I started at Hollywood Video as a Cast Member and then quickly rose to Shift Director. In that position, I was in charge of the store and employees when the Store Director (manager) was not present. This role included managing employees, dealing with complaints and/or team conflicts, and enforcing Hollywood Video brand guidelines and policies. I was also in charge of cashing out tills at the end of the night and preparing deposits. Each week I was expected to reset the wall to retire old releases and make room for new releases and special engagements. I was also expected to have working knowledge of all new releases and be able to find movies quickly for guests when asked. My organization skills were perfected here as I was working with limited space and lots of movies that needed to be on display - to this day, my movie collection is giant... and alphabetized.
Receptionist
This was my first "adult" job and trained me well for my future career. I was the receptionist and was not only in charge of answering and directing all phone calls for the CPAs and partners, I was also in charge of general email inquiries and creating meetings for partners and clients. In addition, I was an integral part of the prep team for tax returns; once the return was created, I would print, bind, place tabs for signatures, and prepare return envelopes for each clients ease of processing. The other large part of my responsibilities here included general office duties: filing and organizing paperwork and maintaining the supply closet for the entire company.
