Computer Science Department

We use the idea of "homophily" to develop an improved method for computing modularity, the most popular method for identifying community structure in networks. We then apply the analysis to make modularity predictions for various types of networks.

Geology Department

Research on submarine and subaerial volcanic centers in the arc and back-arc in the southeast Tyrrhenian SeaWe use X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and geochemical analysis (ICP) to identify and probe mineral composition of sediments and hardpan crusts, as well as using whole-rock/whole-sediment chemical signals as evidence of the nature of recent volcanic activity and hydrothermal venting and related bacterial activity.
