Currently, I am a civics literacy coach with the Florida Department of Education. As a Civics Literacy Coach, I help build and beta-test various active e-learning platforms. Also, as a state civics literacy coach, I have trained and presented to hundreds of Florida teachers. In my current coaching role, I have the task of implementing and fostering depth of knowledge and familiarity with the new Civics and Government standards to all K-12 educators across the state. Before becoming a literacy civics coach, I was a highly effective educator for over twenty years. I taught U.S. History and Civics at the middle school level. While teaching civics, I was my school’s social studies department chair, leading and building common instructional goals as a team leader. While teaching, I won Lee County Teacher of Distinction twice in three years and was a semi-finalist for Lee County Teacher of the Year.Before I was a Civics teacher, I taught for many years in special education. Working with students with disabilities exposed me to the importance of collaboration with teams, adapting lesson plans, and individualizing education to meet the needs of each learner.
