A teacher once told me that my curiosity would one day get the better of me. At the time he meant that I was spending too much time studying foreign languages and not enough time taking business classes. I took it as a compliment.Hello there. My name is Travis Yohey and my curiosity tends to get the better of me. Six months after that conversation I was cracking jokes with a taxi driver in Rwanda in French while doing some non-profit work, I guess he was right, it definitely did better me. The mixture of my business and language school backgrounds enabled me to be an ideal candidate to help with business development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Besides, the people we were helping were really cool. They wanted to develop a business so they wouldn't need to rely on foreign aid. I'm a huge admirer of that sort of moxie.The project was a satisfying success. One year later they were ahead of schedule and under budget, the two phrases everyone likes to hear. This gave me a hunger of sorts, I discovered that liked jumping headlong into projects. My school offered a class helping Mylan Pharmaceuticals. They wanted us to look at their products and think up a few products that would complement what they already had. Not only that, they wanted us to pitch our ideas to a board of executives. This meant mountains of research into a market I was completely unfamiliar with, they had my attention. The morning of the presentation; idea developed, presentation prepared, the only thing that was missing was a case of food poisoning. That's right, I made the mistake of eating a taco salad from the student union the night before. Terrible mistake. Terrific presentation. My pitch was successful and the idea is now in the middle of FDA testing. Since graduating, I have been trying to get experience in a variety of fields that deal with how businesses work. Trying to grow some roots for what I studied in college.First, I worked in UPS' management staff for a winter as a seasonal delivery helper coordinator and hr generalist. I helped take an understaffed distribution center to a healthy level of staffing and into the top five centers for the efficiencient use of delivery helpers.I followed my time at UPS by taking up a real estate agent license. I enjoyed helping people buy and sell homes. There is something exciting about seeing the shine in someone's eyes when they look at a house and can see it being a home. Somewhere they can raise a family. Besides, I had never worked in sales before; now I can confirm how much sales means to a business's success.
