It was beautiful in the Yukon that day. I was up in the far north to play a music festival with my band, Juno award winners Digging Roots. We were in a local park just after lunch when I got word that one of my web clients had been hacked. It was a critical time for them as it was the week before their annual event and ticket sales were peaking. I tethered to my phone and at dial-up speeds, shelled into the server, found the issue and restored the site, all in time to make sound-check. I was always coding. In airports, in the back of the tour van, in hotels. I had two careers going - one in music and one in web development. I loved both. When I started my family though, being on the road got tougher. I made the choice to leave the band and focus on development. It was a great time to do that. I went from a lone wolf developer to a valued team player and leader, first at a SaaS company, and then at a boutique agency. With both companies, I rose to the top. My passion for quality, and ability to deliver creative solutions added value to each company. Some highlights include:- For the SaaS company, I refactored a fractured code base into a sophisticated data model layer based on snippets of SQL. This helped stabilize the product ahead of a multi-million dollar international acquisition.- For the agency, I developed a build system that allowed us to publish typescript components directly as WordPress Gutenberg blocks, and also invoke them directly from within PHP scripts. For example, see https://www.calian.com. - I built a data-heavy WordPress site to have blazing fast search results driven by Elasticsearch. Results in less than 100ms. See https://www.heeman.ca/plants/. - I built a WooCommerce site for a hospital lottery doing $4m+ in sales twice a year with huge traffic spikes around deadlines. See https://www.dreamitwinit.ca.Beyond the technical skills I brought to these companies, I also had a tangible effect on the culture. I'm calm, approachable, insightful, and empathetic, and this fostered trust all the way along the chain. And I found a way to bring a little music into the mix as well. At the agency, I used to sing a song at our Friday stand-ups, which was enjoyed and appreciated by the team.In my next role, I'm looking to build on that foundation of development and architecture with a strong team focussed on delivering an excellent product. I am interested and appropriate for both senior developer and director roles. Do you know of a great fit? I'd love to hear from you!

Programmer/ConsultantPennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency Apr 2005 - May 2006Harrisburg, Pennsylvania AreaI've just put this in as an exercise in contrast. I now consider myself a senior web technologist, with an interest in current technologies. But I've done my time. I put in a consultant's tour with PHEAA a few years back and I was programming mainframes using COBOL. It was a fun experience, but I don't have much interest in keeping current on skills that aren't. For fun, one afternoon, I programmed the MD5 hash in COBOL. Wish I'd kept a copy of that one. #Geek.

Program ManagerConversagent May 2000 - Feb 2002Toronto, Canada AreaConversagent was an exciting startup company looking to create a generic natural language processing engine that could be used in any number of industries. The company didn't make it to market, but my time there provided some of the most rewarding interactions with brilliant people that I've ever had. Cheers to you, Erich, Reg, Andrew & Oz.
