I could work my own hours, doing what I loved most (Customer Experience). I should have known that it wouldn't be that easy. The corporate world was geared up for Neurotypical people and it turned out the small business support world was as well. Starting a business was overwhelming, it grew quickly so there was so much to learn. In the first 3 months I had to learn how to do VAT returns, set up a Ltd company, all the legal stuff, and on top of that, I had to learn to be even more sociable in order to network effectively. I sought out business advice but found even that was aimed at Neurotypicals. So much of it was based on planning, showing up consistently on Social Media and creating lists - so many lists. How many times I heard the phrase “continuity is key to success” I have no idea. I felt like a failure despite the business growth. The business support available wasn't what I needed. They knew my business needs but not 'my needs' as a Neurodivergent person. I could do most of what was required of me, but some days the overwhelm was real and I needed to dump my thoughts on someone that could organise them for me, or make the calls I couldn't on that day. Receiving mail was especially exciting as a child; to have something of their very own to open, with their name on the front of the envelope! It was that “what can it be” “or who’s it from” moment of excitement and wonder that I missed seeing with my girls.Children now receive texts from Santa or an email with a video or a website where they can track his journey. While all that is still lovely, there's nothing like receiving a physical letter from the big guy himself.
