I have always had a mind for improving systems and a heart for helping others. I was never sure how I could find this in a career until I served as an AmeriCorps volunteer in college. The program allowed me to help my community by making a sustainable impact. Driven by my hunger for real systematic change, I organized weekly meetings with 15 different administrative staff to see what was possible. Ultimately, we drafted and passed legislation that bolstered the rights of sexual assault victims in my college’s constitution. All of this was possible because of the balance I maintained between self-driven work and calling on allies when needed. These experiences taught me how my passions could create real systematic change. I followed this new-found knowledge to the Peace Corps and ultimately Morocco. I graduated from college and jumped straight into a new country, a new language, and a crash course in community development. Learning to live in a completely different culture, with a completely different language was a defining experience in my life. I earned the trust of my community members through consistency and dedication over the course of months and, eventually, they shared their goals with me. I learned what it takes to build the strong, long-lasting partnerships required to make actual sustainable change. My ability to make personal connections, large scale project management, and passion to enrich my community defined my experience. The ultimate outcomes of my time in Morocco fall mostly under environmental development work and include:• Multiple tree planting projects yielding a total of 15,000 and counting trees planted in my community• Increasing the local gross food production by 20% by enabling the sale of 5,000 plus fruit-bearing
