About Travis Roof
I am an experienced environmental professional specialising in regulatory compliance and natural resource management at both the national and local level within New Zealand. Additionally, I am familiar with the development of energy resources, particularly within the marine environment, and the New Zealand energy market. I have a wide range of regulatory experience with different types resource management proposals and the remediation of environmental impacts. This experience includes offshore petroleum exploration and development, seabed mining, natural resource developments, contaminated land use, chemical and hydrocarbon spills, and residential developments. One particular skill contributes to my track record success is my ability to understand the technical environmental or engineering aspects of an issue and explain them to various stakeholders in a way that is easy to understand. In addition to my work experience, I completed the Master of Energy (Honours) degree at the University of Auckland. This degree has further expanded my understanding of how traditional and renewable energy resources are utilised, the various technologies used in their development, and how they contribute to the New Zealand energy economy. As part of my study I undertook a thesis research project focusing on modelling a plausible oil spill as a result of a blowout occurring during petroleum exploration activities in the Canterbury Basin, New Zealand. The results of the modelling demonstrated the significant differences in the spill behaviors for three oil types (Very Light Oils, Light Oils and Medium Crudes) when released into the marine environment and the most likely movement of a spill within the research area based on a 10 year dataset of past wind and current movements.Outside of my professional career I enjoy pursueing challenges of a different nature, competing in various off-road running events and regularly particaping in social sports. Please feel free to contract me through the LinkedIn messenger if you would like to get in touch regarding my work experience or thesis research.
Listed skills include Oil And Gas Exploration, Offshore Oil And Gas, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Awareness, and 19 others.

Senior Pollution Specialist
I am responsible for guiding and training Compliance Officers in responding to pollution incidents in the Auckland Region. This entails classroom style training sessions along with practical field training and accompanying officers to Pollution incidents.I am the go-to person for pollution response advice within the Compliance Unit, being available to give advice and coaching whenever required. This includes during a major pollution response incident where I ensure that Senior Compliance Officers and Management understand their roles and responsibilities, while also providing support to the response efforts as needed. I also meet with stakeholders, including other regulatory agencies, local NGOs and iwi to discuss Auckland Council's Pollution Response role and capabilities.
Senior Investigator
I first began working at Auckland Council in May 2017 first an Incident Investigator, before being promoted to a Compliance Specialist and then Senior Investigator in May 2019. In this role, I was responsible for leading and managing complex investigations of illegal environmental and building activities on behalf of Auckland Council. These investigations often involve high risk or high harm activities with the potential to cause significant damage to the natural environment or pose a high risk to public safety. The core of this role was to piece together the puzzle of what has occurred, who is responsible, and provide a recommendation on what level of enforcement action is appropriate. My responsibilities included investigation planning, witness and stakeholder management, gathering and securely storing evidence, successfully managing and leading compliance operations, investigative interviews, and the preparation of prosecution files for court proceedings.
Advisor, Eez Consenting Team - Undertook Study Leave From February 2016 - January 2017
The EEZ Consenting Team was established in response to the enactment of the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012 coming into force. This piece of legislation gave responsibility to the EPA for regulating environmental impacts from different types of projects (such as oil and gas exploration/production, seabed mining, and marine scientific research) taking place within New Zealand's exclusive economic zone.As an Advisor, I have assisted in the technical assessment and processing of several of the first marine consent applications received by the EPA. This has included working with various stakeholders to understand how the marine consent process functions, what needs to be done to get involved in the process and the information requirements for an application. During the technical assessment of an application, I have provided technical advice to the EPA and decision-makers to assist them in evaluating the environmental risks and impacts of various projects. I have also assisted in ensuring the marine consent application process is robust and able to withstand judicial challenge. My role also focused on business improvements for the marine consent process, utilizing lessons learnt and stakeholder feedback from each application, and preparation for new regulatory responsibilities. This has involved working with other team members to develop new business processes for these functions and determine what information may be required in an application.
