I’ve had what’s now fashionably termed a ‘portfolio career’, encompassing electronic publishing, international partnerships, museums and research policy. Arts and humanities runs as a constant thread throughout, not always a golden one. I am passionate, albeit not eloquently so, about the capacity for arts, humanities and design, to effect seemingly impossible change. I’m told my strength lies in seeing patterns and possibilities that others miss, and plotting a pathway to making them a reality. Hence AHRC’s #RICHeS, #CResCa, #CapCo, #iDAH and #PORTIA programmes. For me, far from being a mere ‘nice to have’, arts and humanities research is - when appropriately funded - a critical driver of technological innovation. We have a role in shaping humanity’s future relationship with AI. We contribute to simulation technologies, imaging and omics. We can point a way to decarbonising the built environment. We monetise imagination. Of course we are about creativity and culture and history and heritage. But we are so, so much more!No scientific or technological invention can achieve optimal impact without narrative and story to stir the senses, pique curiosity. Story is what makes science, technology and invention seem relevant, necessary or obvious to our daily existence. And that - when applied - is what arts and humanities is about. Thinking like this, I’m told, makes me "strategic". In reality, it's more an expression of impatience.
