I was the luckiest kid in the world when I got my first front line tour on the Phantom. That aeroplane was a gift from the Gods, and despite not knowing my a*** from my elbow, I had a ball flying the big ugly brute and sharing squadron life with the best of men. When the Phantom got binned, I lucked in again and got the last TI slot out of Brawdy before moving to Valley, teaching Air Combat and Low-Level (tough duty - I know). Half way through that I grew up a bit and became a proper QFI, so I can trim with the best of them. Being an instructor matured me as an aviator and gave me a love for teaching which endures to this day. My luck kept flowing as I was selected for Exchange flying the F18 Hornet with the US Marine Corps - it gets better - living in San Diego and flying out of Miramar. Aside from that, I was serving alongside high quality individuals. I love the Marine Corps - the camaraderie, brother and sisterhood, patriotism and shockingly strong loyalty and pride in the Corps taught me a lot about myself and service to a greater cause, All good things come to an end though and I returned to fly the Tornado F3 around for a couple of years. It is easy to knock the F3, and believe me I do, but crewing out of lots of unserviceable jets was soul destroying. Horror of horrors, I ended up with a heart condition - got grounded - never flew again. A final tour landed in my lap and I moved to Saudi Arabia as a Flight Safety Adviser to the RSAF. Busy job, But it equipped me to be a lot more diplomatic than I had in my previous life as a fighter pilot, and that prepared me for civilian life.So after 18 years the RAF and I parted company - it didn't collapse without me (much as I thought it surely would) and a 4-year glancing blow with BAES as the CI on the Typhoon sim saw me meet Hugh Griffiths, joint owner of Inzpire. Life is full of coincidence, happenstance and just plain dumb luck. I have once again lucked into a dream job which I have been doing since 2008 - Head of Human Factors at probably the best company/CEO you could ever work for. I now get to talk about flying for most of my time, trying to Inzpire (product placement warning) young aircrew to achieve, and then transfer and manipulate those stories for all sorts of customers outside the Military. Don't get me wrong - I wish I was still flying, but shed no tears for poor old Tug. Three overseas tours out of five, flying two legendary aircraft with legendary people, and now enjoying a second coming doing a job I truly love. I tell stories for a living - what could be better than that?
