I successfully completed training and was sworn in as a Peace Corps Volunteer on April 28, 2010. I was posted to Chipelera I Village in the Nkhotakota Southern District to work with local community groups and extension staff in the Forestry Department. My main goal was to reduce community dependency and non-sustainable use of natural resources in protected areas. Some of my responsibilities were to work with government staff and local groups to demonstrate tangible community benefits (and thus long-term improvements in standard of living) from improved use and management of resources.Some of my accomplishments include:- I wrote, and was successfully awarded a VAST Grant for a Voluntary Counseling and Testing Clinic (VCT) which was built and opened on October 15th, 2011 in Mapala.- I founded and organized Mapala Youth Organization which was accredited by the National Youth Council of Malawi and the Ministry Youth and Sports in 2011.- I helped distribute over 3,000 bed nets under the President’s Malaria Initiative in conjunction with PSI in 2011.- I organized and hosted a World AIDS Day program on December 1st, 2011 for 400 people. The ceremony centered around Persons Living With AIDS (PLWAs) and their anti-discrimination campaign that I helped to develop with them. - I founded and organized the Pigs to Fight Poverty Project in 2012.- I designed and founded the Plant the Tree Project in October 2010. By April 2012, the Plant the Tree Project had planted nearly 200,000 trees.
