Sheps Center For Health Services Research May 2018 - May 2023Chapel Hill, NcProject #1: Patterns of Inpatient Care-Seeking by Rural Residents • Provided updated evidence about rural hospital bypass rates, including bypass rates for surgical care and changes in bypass rates follow rural hospital mergers.Project #2: Changes in Inpatient Volume at Rural Hospitals• Compared changes in inpatient volume between rural and urban hospitals, assessed whether changes in inpatient services have been greater in rural hospitals that serve disadvantaged communities, and investigated whether decline in inpatient volume of rural hospitals has been associated with changes in net patient revenue from outpatient services, profitability, financial distress, and hospital closure.Project #3: Rural-Urban Variation in CMS Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCC) Risk Scores• Explored the distribution of HCC risk scores among rural versus urban Medicare beneficiaries and tested whether risk scores are differentially associated with healthcare utilization between rural and urban populations.Project #4: Effect of Medicare Payment Standardization on the Perceived "Cost" of Post-Acute Care Provided in Critical Access Hospital Swing Beds• Estimated the effect of the swing bed payment standardization methodology as compared to the SNF PPS payment standardization methodology on the standardized cost of post-acute care provided in CAH swing beds.Project #5: Effect of Rural Hospital Closures on Local Economic Outcomes• Assessed the effect of rural hospital closures on local economic measures such as per-capita income and unemployment rate.Project #6: Changes in Rural Hospital Revenue• Analyzed changes in the ratio of inpatient to outpatient revenue for rural hospitals over the past decade.
