Profile bio

About Tyler Rivera

Hi there! I'm a recent graduate from the Master of City Planning program at MIT, where I studied housing, community, and economic development. Broadly speaking, my interests lie at the intersection of economic justice, participatory democracy, and more equitable frameworks for community and economic development. I hope to spend my career building a more just, resilient economy that provides every worker with dignity, purpose, and power.Currently, I help to lead policy research around opportunities to expand Black wealth building and economic well-being through employee ownership as the Policy and Impact Manager at Project Equity. Prior to this role, I served as an Associate at Mass Economics, where I provided research and project management support across a range of inclusive economic development engagements. While in graduate school, I immersed myself in courses on labor economics, the solidarity economy, economic democracy, and other relevant topics that provided me with a solid theoretical foundation around economic justice. I complemented this with hands-on experience outside the classroom through internships with Massachusetts Jobs with Justice and the Coalition for Worker Ownership and Power, and by serving as an organizer in the graduate worker unionization campaign at MIT.Prior to graduate school, I worked in youth climate organizing in Boston, as a climate justice fellow with the International Organization for Migration in the Marshall Islands, and as an AmeriCorps VISTA with the NYC Mayor's Office’s Youth Leadership Councils program. I also recently interned with Massachusetts Jobs with Justice, a statewide workers’ rights policy and advocacy organization, and Mt. Auburn Associates, a Somerville-based social impact research and evaluation firm. I graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College in 2016 with a B.A. in Geography, Environmental Studies, and Human-Centered Design. As a planner and organizer, I believe in a world in which every person’s basic human needs are fulfilled, working people have power at work and own what they produce, and society is organized around social needs and not profit. I am eager to work with organizations committed to realizing a similar vision of a more just and democratic world. If you know of opportunities that may be of interest or have questions regarding my background or experiences, please feel free to reach out.
