Tutoring Center CoordinatorPacific International Academy Jan 2015 - Mar 2017Marylhurst UniversityAs Tutoring Center Coordinator at Pacific International Academy, I oversaw the operations of tutoring services to English Language Learners on the campus of Marylhurst University. This included PIA's intensive English students as well as Marylhurst's undergraduate and graduate students. Student needs ranged from basic English usage to master's thesis research.I brought onboard and managed faculty tutors, coordinated tutoring appointment access and revised policy to meet the needs of the student population. I originated a quarterly series of three, one-hour Student Success Skill workshops to help students build effective learning strategies to meet to the rigors of US higher education. These included advice from successful PIA alumni as well as tips on time management, prioritization and project planning. Additionally, I fully-produced a video to help prepare visiting speakers to effectively communicate with English Language Learners. The rangers at the Bonneville Dam visitor’s center loved it! I also analyzed data from tutoring appointments and summarized findings in quarterly reports.Four to ten hours a week, I tutored students in one-on-one sessions or in small groups to help them overcome learning obstacles and achieve academic success. -
English InstructorPacific International Academy Sep 2008 - Mar 2017Marylhurst UniversityAs an English instructor at Pacific International Academy, I designed and delivered courses ranging from one to ten weeks. In class, I was the primary instructor to foreign students preparing for English-language higher education. This work entailed extensive intercultural communication with Korean, Japanese, Saudi Arabian students—and one Burmese monk who loved sugar-free Red Bull. I created and used Keynote and PowerPoint presentations everyday in class and regularly made use of online platforms such as Google Drive, Padlet, OneDrive, Engrade and Kahoot! Occasionally, I worked with elite high-school students, but the majority of my students are young adults enrolled in university and learning English for academic and professional purposes. I also developed and taught PIA’s Service Learning program, which partners students with local non-profits for a volunteering period integrated with functional English lessons. In 2015, I presented "Cross-Cultural Exploration in an ESL Program" at the TriTESOL conference. Miscellaneous duties have included digital content management and text revision for a school website update, curriculum revision, collaborative professional development exercises and crafting magical PowerPoint presentations for our school's directors. -
Publication DirectorFront: A Publication On Contemporary Dance Jan 2009 - Dec 2016Portland, Oregon AreaCo-founder of collective newspaper devoted to dialogues in contemporary dance. All the DIY: creative direction, social media and MailChimp promotion, contribution and content management, copywriting and editing, distribution, fundraising and event production.Launching an indie dance project is like bootstrapping, just without any money at all. Why does FRONT exist? Zealotry—a conviction that contemporary dance needs better print-based representation. Our small team of 3–5 has enjoyed the support and enthusiasm of fellow fanatics in pockets of highly specific cultural production around the world.https://roberttyree.net/front/ -
Arts WriterExperimental Choreography Jan 2009 - Dec 2016https://roberttyree.wordpress.com/Writing on contemporary performance for the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, On the Boards, White Bird Dance, Lisa Radon’s ultra pdx and Claudia La Rocco’s Performance Club.I write blog posts both as an arts advocate and an artist. I keep it loose and experiment with form, style and voice. The only time I’ve worked with an editor was when Claudia La Rocco invited me to cover the TIme-Based Arts Festival. Claudia is a fantastic dance writer whose work in the New York Times and Artforum always delights and challenges me. I’ve linked to one of the two articles I worked on for her rad blog: The Performance Club. -
Experimental ChoreographerRoberttyree.Net Jan 2008 - Dec 2016Hustling as an indie dance artist defined my twenties. I created and performed original works in the US (PDX, LA, NYC) and Europe (Vienna, Bucharest). I also worked for a number of choreographers in Portland—notably Tahni Holt, Linda Austin, Pepper Pepper and Lucy Lee Yim.My earliest dance work pursued a concept of “intensive dance” through performance and publication. Discos with Deleuze, lofting with Lacan—basically club dancing meets critical theory. This culminated in the all-ages All-Night Dance as well as the design + discourse chapbook Intensive Dance. Another series of work paired blogging and dance for video with an enigmatic, improvised solo. This was a two-year collaboration with celebrated Romanian poet Andra Rotaru and our mutually imagined character, Lemur.I’ve worked with videographers + musicians, designers + poets, drag mavericks + potential shamans, LED engineers + ecological intimacy gurus. The makers I’ve met along the path of live art are among the finest people I know.Art making yields countless creative strategies and perspectives. I call on these in my daily adventures in creation. -
