Owing to my design training and in particular my intensive cooperation with Anton Stankowski in Germany and Stuart Ash in Toronto my work expresses elements which can broadly be characterized as Reduction, Objectivity, and Humanization. The body of my work in recent years shows more and more the combination of graphic patterns and images for visual concepts in the built environment. These designs often support wayfinding as landmarks in buildings, but they also add a poetic and reflective atmosphere in our technological driven world. While the concepts are mostly simple and based on geometric forms, the effects in the environment are often surprisingly refreshing and unexpected. They are a visual contribution to the humanization of our build environment, elevating the experience of the everyday citizen from unremarkable or baffling places to pleasurable and engaging ones. I draw inspiration from my artistic work, the exploration of form and colour in the realm of art without budgets or timelines, and try to bring these experiences into my work as a designer. Often, these designs include an artistic element that elevates a program or installation beyond the pure functional and utilitarian aspect. By doing so, I also help young designers in our studio to open up and explore new pathways of visual representation and storytelling. My work has received numerous awards like a Red Dot Award, SEGD Awards, Applied Arts and RGD Awards, etc. In 2017, due to my engagement with art and design, I was elected to become a member of the distinguished Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.During my professional career I have always been in close contact to universities and colleges. I taught as a guest lecturer at the Merz Academy in Stuttgart from 1992-93, at the Technical College in Würzburg from 1993-98 and at OCAD from 2002-03, and have participated in numerous lectures, podium discussions and podcasts at symposiums and public design forums to a wide variety of design topics. As a leader in the design profession I was invited as a juror for international design competitions and function currently on the roster for Public Art Selections for the City of Mississauga.
