I am a highly experienced scientist with a Ph.D. in Physics and over fifteen years of experience designing, building, and running advanced optical systems, analyzing microscopy data, and developing image acquisition and analysis workflows. My expertise in R&D, Systems Engineering, Project Management, and Leadership has been invaluable in developing and implementing innovative hardware and software solutions for advanced optical systems. My strong leadership skills have enabled me to lead and manage teams effectively, delivering high-quality projects on time and within budget. I am a passionate team player and self-learner who is multilingual and eager to tackle future challenges. I have a track record of high-quality publications and research experience at excellent institutions. Currently, I work as an R&D scientist at ZEISS in Oberkochen, Germany, where I am part of the Corporate Research & Technology team working on the latest optical trends for imaging, microscopy, and optical metrology. Furthermore, I am a huge advocate for open science/education and women/diversity in science. For professional inquiries, you can reach me at ulrike.boehm@zeiss.com.All activities marked with the hashtag #teamZEISS and with a ZEISS business reference are subject to the ZEISS Imprint www.zeiss.com/publisher and the ZEISS Privacy Policy: www.zeiss.com/data-protection.

Research SpecialistHoward Hughes Medical Institute Mar 2019 - Feb 2022Chevy Chase, Maryland, UsAt HHMI Janelia Research Campus, I built and modified advanced light microscopes (iPALM, Lattice Light Sheet Microscope, SiMView Light Sheet Microscope, Aberration Corrected Multifocal Microscope, MOSAIC, FIB-SEM, cryo-SIM, etc), supported and consulted life scientists with their imaging experiments at cutting-edge microscopes, gave image analysis/microscopy workshops and developed/implemented new image/data analysis strategies for users from around the world.Furthermore, I am active in the working groups of several microscopy initiatives (BioImaging North America (BINA), German BioImaging, QUAREP, Global BioImaging), and I am spearheading Janelia's Optical Interest Groups activities (organization of workshops and seminars; also combined with the EMBL in Europe and research institutions in Australia). -
Postdoctoral AssociateNational Cancer Institute (Nci) Dec 2016 - Feb 2019Bethesda, Md, UsDuring my postdoctoral research at the National Cancer Institute, I used, developed, and combined new technologies to understand gene expression in eukaryotic cells. The overall aim was to design and constructed a novel imaging modality that allowed the visualization of the genome at high resolution during transcription in time and space (used programs for instrument control and image processing/analysis: MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, CellProfiler, ImageJ, Fiji). Simultaneously, new advanced fluorescence labeling strategies based on dCas9 for the genome were developed and optimized.Furthermore, I had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant at the University of Massachusetts: ("Advanced microscopy course for graduate students"), I was leading two summer intern journal clubs at the NIH about "Optical Microscopy & Imaging in the Biomedical Science" (2017) and "Advanced Imaging Techniques in Biomedical Sciences" (2018), and I was co-chairing the NIH's Light Microscopy Interest Group; an initiative to bring together NIH microscopy enthusiasts. During my time at the NIH, I was also co-chairing the Visiting Fellows Committee (VFC) for two years, representing more than 2,000 foreign postdoctoral researchers at the NIH. Together with our VFC team, we have successfully hosted several community-building events (e.g., immigration symposia with the immigration specialists of the NIH, career fairs with various company and government/embassy representatives). -
Research AssistantMax Planck Institute For Biophysical Chemistry Jan 2016 - Nov 2016Göttingen, Niedersachsen, DeAfter my Ph.D. studies, before my postdoctoral studies in the US, I worked as a research assistant at the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (transitional research stay). I continued my work in superresolution microscopy and mentored two Ph.D. students and one master student. Furthermore, I supported the organization of the 2nd "Labeling and Nanoscopy Conference" in Heidelberg. -
Phd CandidateMax Planck Institute For Biophysical Chemistry May 2010 - Dec 2015Göttingen, Niedersachsen, DeDuring my doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (MPIbpc), I combined two advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques - 4Pi microscopy and RESOLFT microscopy - to gain a better view inside cells and tissues (4Pi-RESOLFT nanoscopy). The goal was the three-dimensional visualization of living biological structures and their dynamics far below the diffraction-limit at low light levels. Therefore, I built a new optical setup, wrote its instrument control, and optimized its image analysis (used programs: LabVIEW, Imspector, Python, MATLAB, ImageJ, Fiji). We could finally show that it is possible to perform live-cell imaging at low light levels with an isotropic high spatial resolution (Boehm et al., Nature Communications 2016). The project was supervised by Prof Stefan Hell (Department of NanoBiophotonics).Furthermore, I had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant at the University of Göttingen:"Experimental Physics IV: Quantum, Atomic and Molecular Physics" & "Experimental Physics III: Optics" and at the Heidelberg University: "Advanced physics laboratory for physics students" and I also mentored five new Ph.D. students and two master students.During my time at the MPIbpc, I was also co-chairing the Ph.D. / Postdoc Community at the institute and I was active in the Max Planck PhDnet as the deputy spokesperson in 2011 coordinating efforts for fairer payment of Ph.D. students and establishing common best practice guidelines together with representatives of the Max Planck Society headquarters in Munich. -
Diploma StudentMax Planck Institute Of Biochemistry 2008 - 2009Martinsried, Bayern, DeDuring my diploma thesis, I was working on correlative cryo microscopy at liquid nitrogen temperatures. The aim of the project was to optimize and further develop the method/workflow. The project included sample preparation for electron cryo-tomography and cryo fluorescence microscopy, imaging, and subsequent image processing and analysis (programs used: MATLAB, SPIDER, Python). The project was supervised by Prof Wolfgang Baumeister and Dr. Jürgen Plitzko (Department of Molecular Structural Biology).Furthermore, I had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant at the Technical University of Munich: "Theoretical Physics II: Electrodynamics" & "Theoretical Physics I: Theoretical Mechanics." -
