Umar Shariff MD FRCS is a Consultant Colorectal & Peritoneal Malignancy Surgeon at Good Hope Hospital, UHB NHS FT, appointed to the trust in 2018.He studied medicine at the University of Sheffield graduating in 2003, whilst attaining an intercalated BSc (Neurosciences) from University of London (2000). He went on to become an anatomy tutor at Sheffield University and completed the Sheffield (BST) Basic Surgical Training rotation. He then undertook specialist registrar surgical training in general and colorectal surgery in the West Midlands. During this time, he was awarded MD from the Sheffield University for his thesis on cognitive surgical skills training in colorectal surgery.Mr Shariff has a specialist interest in the management of patients with peritoneal metastasis (spread) from primary and recurrent appendix and colorectal tumours.Prior to his consultant post, he was the senior Peritoneal Malignancy and Pseudomyxoma fellow at the internationally renowned Basingstoke Peritoneal Malignancy Institute, trained in the highly specialised techniques of Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) and heated intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to treat conditions including advanced appendiceal tumours, primary and recurrent colorectal peritoneal metastases, Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) and mesothelioma. During this time, he completed certification in the ESPSO (European Peritoneal Surface Oncology) programme. He has also trained in the novel intraperitoneal chemotherapy delivery technique known as PIPAC (Pressurised intraperitoneal aerosolised chemotherapy). He is an experienced laparoscopic surgeon trained in minimal access (keyhole) surgery for colon and rectal cancer. He is also a JAG-accredited colonoscopist.During training he was also awarded surgical overseas travelling fellowships to Washington D.C, USA, Toronto, Canada and Erlangen, Germany focussing on peritoneal malignancy and complete mesocolic excision (CME) surgery for colon cancer. His clinical research interests involve trainee and patient-related multimedia resources. In collaboration with a professional multimedia company, Digimed, he has been instrumental in the development of innovative training tools for general/colorectal trainees and a CRS + HIPEC patient pathway resource. He has published widely and presented nationally and internationally on colorectal/peritoneal disease and surgical training and is currently involved in collaborative research (PI for the ROSSINI 2 multi-centre trial and site lead for the EAGLE Study). He has also served as a faculty member on national conferences.
